Pros
1
Exceptional client service and communication
“Braid (and Albie) were very friendly and accommodating. He kept me involved throughout the process and was very efficient and informative the whole way through.”
2
Aggressive and effective negotiator
“Braid was great. He told me these things might take a while, but to be patient. GEICO initially offered to only pay my medical expenses, then a little later expenses plus $7K. Braid advised me to wait because he was sure he could negotiate more.”
3
Personalized attention and care for clients
“Braid, as I told you, you're an angel in my life for a reason. (Believe me, as a US CITIZEN, INNOCENTLY OWED TONS OF MONIES, I was so traumatized from the initial accident, not even focusing on my entitlement.) All the sudden this man (ALSO NOT focused on MONEY) - helped me throughout and steered me in the direction I didn't even think existed.”
4
Extensive legal expertise and knowledge
“Braid is a very sharp, extremely knowledgeable legal professional, can assess tough situations quickly, can call lies in an instant, has kept me sane and the other parties involved accountable.”
5
Highly recommended by past clients
“I highly recommend Braid and his office. A big THANK YOU Braid from me and my family”

I was injured in a bike accident. The driver was sitting in his car and opened his car door on me as I rode by. Ended up at the ER with 6 internal and 6 external stitches in my neck, an inch away from my carotid artery, a sore wrist which a MRI revealed to be a slight tendon tear and abrasions on my knee and hand, plus a sore shoulder. The driver's GEICO insurance tried to refute my claim saying I was 50% at fault for not looking to see if a driver was in the car. The police report said he was in violation since I had the right of way. I initially contacted a larger law firm I saw advertised on TV. They referred me to Braid. Braid was great. He told me these things might take a while, but to be patient. GEICO initially offered to only pay my medical expenses, then a little later expenses plus $7K. Braid advised me to wait because he was sure he could negotiate more. Eventually he negotiated a significant settlement, much more than I ever expected. The whole process took 7 months. I highly recommend him.

When you need a really good lawyer in a tough and complex traffic accident situation then I highly recommend Law Offices of Braid Pezzaglia. Before I chose Braid's office, I had done extensive research about legal firms specializing in motorcycle accidents in the San Jose and SF Bay Area locations. I shortlisted a handful of them and talked to them before I made my final decision. I am glad I chose the Law Offices of Braid Pezzaglia. Braid is a very sharp, extremely knowledgeable legal professional, can assess tough situations quickly, can call lies in an instant, has kept me sane and the other parties involved accountable. He is very responsive and even though he has many clients at a time he never failed to make me feel I am on top of his list. I highly recommend Braid and his office. A big THANK YOU Braid from me and my family

I found Braid through AVVO when my father found himself on the receiving end of an auto insurance claim. I consulted with several attorneys through AVVO, and he stood out as one of the few who was willing to take time to listen, advise, and offer actionable and detailed information even though I had not engaged his services yet. I sensed he was unpretentious yet extremely knowledgeable and had the patient disposition to work well with my elderly parents. I was not disappointed. Mr. Pezzaglia skillfully guided us (with me out-of-state) through the legal maze, thoroughly explaining our options and working with the insurance attorney behind-the-scenes to negotiate a reasonable settlement. It gave me great confidence to know my parents were receiving ethical and highly experienced professional assistance in their case. He responded to communications promptly, and his fees are quite reasonable. Without a doubt, he has my highest recommendation.

Sahar went above and beyond to help with my USCIS case, all in a very short 3 weeks time frame set by USCIS. Could not hope for a more knowledgeable and patient attorney.

Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Jose, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
