I am incredibly grateful to the wonderful Moreno Family Law Firm for their exceptional assistance with my divorce. Their guidance throughout the complex legal process and their advice at every step helped me reach a resolution in a very difficult divorce. As I did not have access to my marital assets or income, they promptly helped me secure alimony. Their support with the declarations and the settlement officer conference was crucial in helping me reach a final settlement agreement with my spouse. I am very thankful that the divorce is complete and that I have received my share of marital assets. Attorney Moreno and paralegal Martinez were always very prompt in responding to my many questions and concerns during this time. Attorney Moreno is a very good negotiator, accessible, and considerate. Their billing is reasonable, and they provided a full breakdown of the charges. This is a great, ethical law firm and I so glad that I went through this process with them. Thank you, Moreno Law Firm and Attorney Moreno!

Judy Culberson, my ex-wife, left a negative goggle review of my attorney, Marilyn E. Moreno. Ms. Moreno did not represent Judy Culberson, and we made an offer within the first month of the case agreeing to split all assets 50-50. Judy's insistence that she wanted 80% of all assets is what dragged the case on and made me spend money preparing for trial until Judy finally settled. Her review is simply sour grapes. I believe I was given the best representation possible and at a very reasonable cost. All of the staff at Moreno Family Law were very kind and helpful with my case. Marilyn is an attorney that will fight for your rights to receive what is owed to you. I would recommend the Moreno Family Law Firm to anyone that wants a quick and fair outcome in their divorce.

Worst Lawyer ever!!! Marilyn Moreno does not care about families and trying to work towards amicable solutions that are in the best interest of families. She is all about putting the most money in her own pocket by dragging out cases and making unreasonable request for loads of documentation that is not even relevant to the case! She is a bully and should be ashamed of herself and her practices!

The Moreno Family Law Firm is highly professional and competent, they know what they are doing and they are the best. I was working with another family law firm previously, they were incompetent and the lawyer who was assigned to me was unprofessional to say the least. Long story short, my case became very complicated and it was heading toward a very bad outcome. I had one chance to try to salvage it and minimize my loss. I am still glad that I made that phone call. Ms. Moreno, the Firm founder, met with me almost immediately after my phone call for consultation. Of note, our meeting took place on a Saturday. Ms. Moreno spent her time listening and analyzing my case without talking over me. As I was well aware, my case got very complicated because of someone's incompetency. I didn't have a high hopes that Ms. Moreno would take my case. After all, who would want to clean up someone else's mistakes? But Ms. Moreno did not show any sign of hesitation and she accepted my case right away. I don't know if Ms. Moreno ever felt a bit regret for helping me, because it appears that my case gave her a run for her money. I felt that Ms. Moreno was working extra hard to resolve and untangle a lot of hidden issues created by my former attorney that I was NOT aware of. Ms. Moreno’s experience and expertise came into play and she was able to identify all the issues that she needed to work on in the least amount of time. My case, went from totally unprepared, was as best prepared as it could ever be. After all the preparation and Ms. Moreno’s best intention to settle the case while minimizing my losses, we could not settle because not everyone is willing to play fair. My case had to go on trial unless I was willing to accept all the ridiculous demands. At this point, Ms. Moreno introduced, another very strong and professional lawyer, Mr. Michael Moreno to assist me. Mr. Moreno had been busy when I first started contact with Ms. Moreno; however, Mr. Moreno was assisting the firm behind the scene and provided his expertise throughout my case. In other words, he was familiar with my case despite he somewhat took over my case toward the end. I said “somewhat” because Ms. Moreno is not one of those senior attorneys who just endorse the case to someone and then “out of sight, out of mind”. Ms. Moreno remained available and supportive as needed when I was working with Mr. Michael Moreno closely. On the day of trial, Mr. Moreno showed that he was not just educated and trained, he was very talented as he was able to dissect the case in a way that looks like as if it was on TV and scripted. This law firm is very expensive, but they are worth every penny of it. The best part is, they are very budget conscious and they list everything in detail in their invoices. Simply put, THE MORENO FAMILY LAW FIRM IS A VERY HONEST LAW FIRM. The team of paralegals is also very professional and respectful to say the least. They are easy to work with while being very supportive for my needs. From my perspective, this law firm runs with respect and dignity. If you are honest and not trying to steal from others, this law firm can definitely help you to resolve your issues. At the end of my case, I feel that I have gained two new friends because Ms. Moreno and Mr. Moreno were genuinely caring and very supportive.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Jose, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
