Earl Conaway must have graduated at the top of his class I would recommend him to everyone. He is so very sharp and doesnt miss a beat. He worked a case against law enforcement for me and got it all dismissed in my favor. He holds true to his word and is very easy to get along with. Thank you Earl. You have given me a new opportunity for a fresh start and a good life.

Five Stars Plus! Earl Conaway navigated my case masterfully through the San Luis Obispo Court System resulting in reducing my misdemeanor to a speeding infraction with a much reduced fine. Recently I consulted with him on another matter and everything again was 100% positive. Bottom line, his experience, honesty and integrity are unmatched and you will be glad you hired him to fight your case.

Earl Conaway is a dedicated attorney who goes the extra mile for his clients. He explores all avenues of defense, leaving no stone unturned, no avenue unexplored. And this means that whatever the final result, you can feel confident that it was the best outcome possible under the circumstances surrounding your case. Moreover, Earl keeps you informed of all developments in your case, and he is always available to discuss your concerns and answer any questions, which is so important considering being charged with a crime is already stressful enough without being kept in the dark by your attorney. I was arrested and charged for suspicion of driving under the influence and the initial blood results from the crime lab showed a blood alcohol content of 0.09%. It appeared that my goose was cooked and that I would end up with a DMV suspension AND a criminal conviction. But Earl did not simply roll over and advised me to take a deal for a first time DUI, like most attorneys do. No. Instead, he retained his own experts who performed additional testing on my blood sample and they returned with a BAC of 0.07%!!! But he did not stop there. He then subpoenaed all the evidence in my case, including the video of my driving and arrest, and he studied this evidence very closely, identifying every instance where the arresting officer had lied on the police report and poking holes in the prosecution's case. In the end, the DMV set aside my suspension and returned my license, and with their case against me now eviscerated by Earl, the prosecution was reduced to offering me a deal where I would plea to reckless driving, without the presence of alcohol (Dry Reckless), which I accepted. I have no doubt that had I chosen to spend the time and money to go to trial with Earl, we would have prevailed. But I live in Southern California and it simply did not make economic sense for me to push the matter to trial. If you get in trouble and need a skilled advocate, I highly recommend Earl Conaway.

I've seen Mr. Conaway in court numerous times, discussed many cases with him and had the pleasure to see him in trial multiple times. He is very smooth and has a great command of the law. If there is anything that he isn't 100% sure of, he makes it his mission to research the issue to the point of mastery. Very impressive.

Mr. Conaway has been an excellent advisor through my conviction for wet and reckless. It was such a process to get all the facts sorted out. He was so honest and to the point and I respected that and it humbled me so much during that time. He recommended going to the lab experts, retesting my blood etc. He assured me that we would do everything that we should and could do to work the situation out in my favor so that it was not only going to beneficial to me, but it would be just. He is a great man and lawyer and I would recommend him to anyone. That of which I did! My dad has called him for some legal advice like a week ago :). He too is so happy with Earl's expertise!

Robbi Rizzo is an exceptional counselor. I had a complicated case that involved a corporate issue (I shared ownership with my ex in the corporation). In addition, I and my minor child are residing in different county (with venue in SLO). My case lasted 3 years. I changed several attorneys. When Robbi picked up my case (6 months ago), it seemed almost hopeless. Highly ethical, she advised me about the best strategy to take, and went beyond my expectation professionally advising me on the corporate issues with the best outcome I could hope for. I appreciate her great personality, as I felt her sincere desire to assist me, and not just to perform her professional duty. Through the case, she lead me step by step, responding promptly to any of my e-mails with useful comments. I've always felt supported. Without any hesitation, I would recommend Robbi Rizzo to anyone who is looking for a strong legal defense.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Luis Obispo, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
