I had a very difficult divorce that took a great deal of time to get through. Yvonne and her staff were an amazing support through the entire process. Yvonne was sensitive, supportive, strong and extremely knowledgeable, fair and balanced. She fought for my situation and my children with unwavering strength. I always felt like she was levelheaded when at times when I may not have been. She guided me through a painful time and we ended up with an extremely successful outcome. I highly recommend Yvonne and her firm.

I recently went through an otherwise very stressful divorce and court trial. I am a practicing physician and my ex a housewife for 17 years. I have three children. I was at a distinctly disadvantageous position to begin with. My divorce lasted for 2 years from the time of filling. My ex and her boyfriend hired 2 teams of very aggressive attorneys from Southern California and San Francisco making the case very complicated, over litigated and stressful. I felt I was helpless until I met Yvonne Seeley and her team of associates and assistants. With professionalism, super knowledge of California family law, and super experience as a trial lawyer, I was able to more than survive the ordeal, ending with a fair and satisfactory trial result, and having my interest maximally protected. Ms. Seeley and her team, taking my interest in heart and practice, knowing what is relevant and what is not, have turned a very complicated, overwhelming and over litigated case into a relatively simple one, backed up by legally sound case laws, theories, reasoning and argument. In the process, she convincingly pointed out the obstreperous, dishonest and greedy nature of the other party. Ms. Yvonne Seeley and her team has walked extra miles to help me. I went through the darkness of a long tunnel that appeared without hope of reaching the other end, then rediscover meaning of life, and establish confidence in the fairness of the California court. This good lawyer makes a huge difference in my life. I recommend Ms. Seeley without any reservation. I whole heartedly thank Ms. Seeley and her team.

Ms. Seeley's counsel in my marriage dissolution was invaluable. She helped me understand the dissolution case process, and helped me to manage my own expectations with respect to timing of case events. She's the consummate attorney in the sense that she's the strongest advocate for her clients. In family law cases where things can get muddied by a bit of emotion, she keeps things real and in perspective. As a paralegal, I was able to prepare the bulk of paperwork myself, but without Ms. Seeley's keen eye to some details, and recommendations as to alternatives -- in specific related to division of property and spousal support, the case might still be pending judgment. I was pleased to receive the desired outcome with the court in a reasonable amount of time. The courts might be a bit slow, but the team at Seeley & Madigan couldn't have been more responsive. Questions answered right away, and proposed solutions offered quickly. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Helen Yvonne Seeley and the team at Seeley & Madigan. If ever I need family law counsel again, Ms. Seeley would be the first attorney i'd contact.

can't say enough about Ms. Seeley. I went through a high conflict divorce and there continues to be battles. She handles everything like an ultimate. Many people understand the law but at the end of the day, especially when going through a difficult time, service becomes of paramount importance. Ms. Seeley is honest, responsible, professional, responsive and proactive. And, on top of that, I found her experience to be a huge asset. Why is experience so important? Because experienced attorneys know the personalities of Judges and other attorneys. They know when to go to court and when to settle out of court. They also know 3rd parties such as custody evaluators, vocational assessors, mediators and others who become an important part of the process. I recommend her without hesitation.

Yvonne Seeley represented my sister in a very emotional and debilitating divorce. I was very much involved from start to finish because of the emotional state of my sister and was aware of all steps taken by Ms. Seeley to ensure she was fairly and honestly represented. There was no need on my part for any concern . Family law is one of the most difficult areas of the law, but Ms Seeley was caring and forthcoming throughout this nightmare, and handled my sister's case with integrity, expertise, trustworthiness and just the right amount of aggressiveness. In our opinion, she is the absolute best, and we would recommend her highly to anyone.

Great lawyer. I had been to 3 previous lawyers with my divorce case and Mr. Davis turned the case around even though he said he did not think he could repair the damage that had already been done. I did not get everything I should have gotten but I sure got more than I had already lost due to 3 previous incompetent lawyers. He was very aggressive and the other attorney could not keep up wih him.

I started with Andrew as my civil lawyer, and after frustration with my family lawyer, I hired Andrew for my family case too. Andrew and his colleague, Lindsey, are the strongest attorneys I would vouch for. Extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and professional. My former attorney made (/forced) me a settlement to share legal and physical custody of my minor. That was nothing but a disappointment. It made my case stretch over and over. When Andrew and Lindsey took over my case, I ended up getting full legal and physical custody of my daughter while the judge was boldly against me in every single hearing and trial. But Andrew navigated the case for me and made me gain full custody of my daughter. Andrew was transparent in presenting the case. He allowed me to express myself in the court. I have to add that Andrew is very fair and reasonable in his fees and charging me. I could not think of any better service.

We sat down and told him what I wanted in an operating agreement and he did a good job on the first draft and we signed 2 days later without much back and forth. He did everything I asked and gave me good advice. I am very satisfied.

Lana’s advice solved many outstanding issues with my relative’s criminal case. Most experts give advice that is very general and not applicable in real life legal situations. Lana’s information allowed me to make decisions that maximized my relative’s chances of success. I’ve found that our legal system is fickle in nature, advice and strategy must revolve around probabilities of success. Lana’s guidance allowed me to execute a series of steps to achieve the best possible outcome. Without Lana, I may have made the wrong decision in my quest to help my relative. My dialogue with her proved to be priceless.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Mateo, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
