We had a great experience working with Mr. Liao. He was so knowledgeable and try to accommodate us at a time that we requested. When my mom and I had into car accident, my husband contacted his office and got us an appointment to speak with Mr. Liao. He listened to us with no rush. Process our insurance claim and guide us every step. Even prepared us before our deposition. Our claims got settled but since we didn't really get much with insurance he even waived attorneys fee. He is a great lawyer and always there to help. Will definitely refer Mr. Liao.

After reading many positive reviews, I connected with Allister after my mother was hit by a San Mateo Recology garbage truck. The truck completely totaled her car and left her traumatized. My mother is a non-native English speaker and was hesitant to take legal action. Allister also speaks Mandarin, so I encouraged them to meet. He is not only knowledgeable, but compassionate. Over the course of 2+ years, Allister walked her through the process and what to expect. With Allister’s guidance, we reached a settlement. We highly recommend Allister; he is extremely trustworthy, compassionate, responsive, and professional.

First off Allister is awesome! I came to Allister about the time my statute of limitations was running out and he quickly jumped into action to make sure everything was filed before the date. Allister kept me informed every step of the way. What I loved most was Allister would take the time to make sure I understood all of my options and what potential outcomes would be and what it could mean to me financially. Allister even took the time one night to talk with my husband to make sure he was on board with the direction we were going. Allister attended my deposition with me to make me feel at ease. He also fought hard to get me the most money for all my pain and suffering from my car accident, which ended up being triple what the insurance company originally offered. I would highly recommend Allister to anyone, you will be in great hands!

Allister is a great person, amazing and experienced attorney, I enjoyed a lot working with him on a case for my family member. He is very patient, detail oriented and takes time to explain everything to his clients. I enjoyed how Allister can describe complex subjects very clearly to me. He is definitely one of the best attorneys I have worked with. Allister is very honest and gives correct information about possible outcomes of each scenario. He works very hard to make sure clients get best outcome. Great negotiator on behalf of clients as well. Many thanks to Allister for his help and support! Highly recommend him.

“I was just in a hurry.” That was the first thing the driver said to me, while I was still laying on the ground, after making an illegal right turn from the center lane and striking me on my bicycle. The entire experience was traumatizing and the financial impact was immense. I had no idea how to proceed once I was home and recovering from a broken ankle. I was referred to Allister, and after my experience with him, I am so glad I was. From the very beginning, Allister made sure I understood everything about the process, giving all the possible outcomes to prepare me for whichever one we ended up with. His online portal makes paperwork a breeze, and his continuous follow-up will put you at ease knowing he’s on top of your case. As a result of the accident, some mental health challenges from the past that I had overcome came back, including debilitating anxiety. I became an extremely difficult client to deal with, but Allister remained patient and was able to secure an insurance settlement despite difficulty in communicating with me. What I received in financial compensation was far more than I expected. I had seen numerous specialists and attended several follow ups which could have easily added up to thousands of dollars, but with Allister advocating on my behalf, only a small fraction of that was taken from my settlement payment. I am beyond grateful for Allister’s commitment to my case and thanks to him I was able to replace my damaged bicycle with an upgrade. If you came out of an accident injured and haven’t got a clue what to do, Allister is definitely the attorney you want. If I ever get hit again (knock on wood), Allister can count on my business!

Great lawyer. I had been to 3 previous lawyers with my divorce case and Mr. Davis turned the case around even though he said he did not think he could repair the damage that had already been done. I did not get everything I should have gotten but I sure got more than I had already lost due to 3 previous incompetent lawyers. He was very aggressive and the other attorney could not keep up wih him.

I started with Andrew as my civil lawyer, and after frustration with my family lawyer, I hired Andrew for my family case too. Andrew and his colleague, Lindsey, are the strongest attorneys I would vouch for. Extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and professional. My former attorney made (/forced) me a settlement to share legal and physical custody of my minor. That was nothing but a disappointment. It made my case stretch over and over. When Andrew and Lindsey took over my case, I ended up getting full legal and physical custody of my daughter while the judge was boldly against me in every single hearing and trial. But Andrew navigated the case for me and made me gain full custody of my daughter. Andrew was transparent in presenting the case. He allowed me to express myself in the court. I have to add that Andrew is very fair and reasonable in his fees and charging me. I could not think of any better service.

We sat down and told him what I wanted in an operating agreement and he did a good job on the first draft and we signed 2 days later without much back and forth. He did everything I asked and gave me good advice. I am very satisfied.

Lana’s advice solved many outstanding issues with my relative’s criminal case. Most experts give advice that is very general and not applicable in real life legal situations. Lana’s information allowed me to make decisions that maximized my relative’s chances of success. I’ve found that our legal system is fickle in nature, advice and strategy must revolve around probabilities of success. Lana’s guidance allowed me to execute a series of steps to achieve the best possible outcome. Without Lana, I may have made the wrong decision in my quest to help my relative. My dialogue with her proved to be priceless.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Mateo, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
