I engaged Jeannette as my attorney after getting a judgement against me in small claims court, and realizing that I needed a lawyer to help me identify the correct legal approach to take, and to help me present my case in a succinct and well prepared manner. Jeannette, was a tremendous help. She identified the legal points that were irrelevant, and those that were key to winning my case. She took the facts of my case, email copies, and other supporting material that I sent her, and organized them into the order in which they should be reviewed in court in front of the judge. Jeanette provided a fixed rate contract for the case, and divided her support for the case into preparation, and in-court support, and gave me the option to either get her legal advice and assistance in the preparation only, or to also have her help me present my case in court. Her approach was fair and flexible. After getting Jeannette's help with the preparation, I decided that I needed her guiding hand in court. Jeannette's role in court was that she asked me questions, based on the material and legal strategy which she had assembled, which I answered in front of the judge, and she passed the judge the supporting material as exhibits. As a result of Jeannette's legal advice and in-court legal representation, the outcome of the case was that the court not only overturned the judgement that the small claims court had made against me, but the court also ruled in favor of my case that the defendant should pay me back the payments that I had previously made to the defendant, due to his contract breach. The court also awarded me court costs and attorneys fees. I strongly recommend Jeannette Darrow for anyone engaged in a small claims case, and she clearly has the experience and legal knowledge to support clients in other civil cases.

Jeannette is the best! She got me through a very difficult time. She was compassionate, thorough and got things done quickly and effectively! I know I can call on her anytime....and I still do. She made me feel as though I was her only client, though I knew better. I highly recommend Jeannette to anyone who wants a smart, "hands on" lawyer.

During the first phone conversation I had with Jeannette I knew right away that I could trust her. For me this was incredibly important because it was her honesty that won me over and safely allowed me to accept her as my representative partner. I use the word "partner" because Jeannette created an environment where we worked together, toward a common goal, and I knew I could count on her. She of course led the way, and I always felt like we made progress together. It was such a nice change from a previous experience in another, somewhat similar situation. What facilitated this the best was the way she communicated. I always knew what was happening, and I always had a voice and a choice. I highly recommend Jeannette Darrow as an attorney. She demonstrated true professionalism by promptly working on my case, caring about my situation, and communicating with me on a regular basis. Through her hard work the case was resolved in my favor. If I ever get into a similar situation again, without hesitation, I know exactly who to call, Jeannette is known to be a real fighter! When there is an injustice done, she will fight hard for you. If you have a dispute with anyone, a landlord, contractor or business dispute, Jeannette will take the burden of dealing with it off your shoulders. Her compensation is reasonable and so much worth it. I have worked with her a few times and I have been satisfied every time.

Jeannette helped me with resolving a small claims matter after the fact. I had paid the judgement, but the court did not have a record of the payment. This became an issue when I needed to get some financing. I found Jeannette online and emailed her and she was willing to help me out and was interested in my matter even though it was small. She was very up front about the fact that it could take awhile to get the record corrected. Throughout the process which lasted about 5 months she kept me informed and updated and took the time to check on my case. I wish I had met her sooner. She could have saved me a lot of time and headache. More to the point I probably could have prevailed in my small claims case, and avoided the situation I was in. My past experience with lawyers was if the amount is less than $3000 then just settle. Its nice to know that there are good lawyers out there that still care about the small cases. Jeannette is one of them.

I want to thank the law offices of Christopher McCann and for helping me out with my DUI case. Him and his staff are very well prepared and know exactly what they are doing. As soon as I decided to go with Mr. McCann he had a game plan and sprung into action. The competition was asking for me to speak to their secretary and to send them emails overall just too many things. If you hire Christopher that is who you are going to get a one on one experience with your lawyer. What I really liked about my Chris and his team is that they always kept me in the loop with anything that happened in my case. Over all 10/10 experience I would definitely recommend him if you want a good experienced lawyer. He was able to get my DUI case dismissed.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Santa Ana, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
