My family and I were the unfortunate victims of a very bad tenant. Our insurance retained a law firm and Jennifer Feres was assigned to our case. From the start she treated us like family. She walked us through all the variables, and told us the brutally honest truth ever step of the way. She did her research, she followed up with every request we made, and followed through with every action she said she was going to take. I personally have never met a lawyer like Jennifer. Aside from the fact that Jennifer is incredibly knowledgeable in Landlord/Tenant law, she also has a big heart. She really cared for us in a way that most lawyers don't. I truly believe that if it was not for her and her tenacious pursuit of excellence, our case would not have the outcome that it had. Hopefully you never need a lawyer, but if you ever do, Jennifer is the best choice you can make.

Jennifer Feres of The Feres Firm has been representing me since March 2012 and continues to represent me as we are in the process of closing my case after a long two plus years of court proceedings surrounding the custody, visitation and support of my son. This case began as a custody modification sought out by myself and turned into a move away case sought out by my sons’ mother. Once I discovered my sons mothers intentions and request to move him to Florida from our home state of California I immediately sought council. I interviewed several attorneys and I was looking for an individual who was well versed in family law, practiced with integrity, had my son and my best interest at heart and whom was very proactive as well as informative. Little did I know that I stumbled upon pure perfection when I found Jennifer Feres. Jennifer was referred to me by my paralegal at the time and she practiced out of Orange County (my case is out of Riverside County) but that did not stop her from taking on my case. Since the very inception of our attorney and client relationship Jennifer has been open, honest, respectful and beyond professional in all of her interactions with not only myself but opposing council and the court as well. Never have I felt that my best interest was so well protected and fought for. Jennifer maintained an open door policy with me allowing me to contact her whenever necessary and made herself more than available despite her busy schedule. Beyond that she was there for me as during this process I lost my mother and Jennifer never missed a beat in ensuring my interest were being addressed. Additionally she helped me to maintain a positive disposition regarding the final results of my case. I can gladly say that while my case is about 95% complete with the impeccable services of Jennifer and the Feres firm I have succeeded in maintaining my sons residence here in California and will be able to continue to raise him! If for any reason anyone has ever doubted the services of an attorney be assured that the services of Jennifer Feres are without a doubt “THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS”! Thank you Jennifer for everything!

I was referred to Jennifer by a very close personal friend that is a court reporter in orange county and knows most family law attorneys and their competence level. She picked Jennifer and the results were very one sided in favor of my friend. So on to my story, I had an ex that was very bitter and misinformed by her attorney and trying to get way more than her fair share of our children and assets. I am just a normal guy who loves his kids and has a lot of time to spend with them. All I wanted to be was fair and able to have my kids 50% of the time. My ex's plan was for me to have them 20%, her to stop working and be a stay home mom, to close our small business behind my back, to take about 500k worth of assets that were acquired previous to our 5 year marriage, and to paint me as an unfit abusive father/ husband. So I was pretty stressed out and felt very overwhelmed, Jennifer's demeanor, education, and confidence level was overwhelming to the opposing big $ attorney. Jennifer systematically took them apart and my ex was denied 100% of everything she was asking for by the judge. Although nobody wins in a divorce I had the best possible outcome. I have referred at least 4 more clients to Jennifer 2 are in limbo, 1 is ongoing and looks very favorable for my friend, and 1 is recently finished with my friend having a very positive outcome. this is all very recent within last 2 years, its 11/13 now...

Rex was very thorough and reassuring. I was afraid of the whole idea let alone the process of filling for bankruptcy. After going through the consultation I was relieved that it wasn’t as tedious as I had anticipated. His knowledge of the process gave me the confidence I needed to go forward with my decision. His roadmap to my needed documentation made the whole process seamless. He’s very efficient and I recommend him 10/10.

I was referred to Jennifer by a close friend of mine after she got her a very good settlement. I hired her to represent me on my Workers compensation case and she was really detailed in explaining everything to me and was very attentive to me as well. I highly recommend her for her knowledge of Workers Compensation and injured workers rights, she definitely goes above and beyond for her clients. I am very happy that I found an attorney that was always on my side.

Kenneth has advised me, my business partners, and my family on multiple occasions. He's assisted with everything from simple things like setting up an LLC to helping negotiate a couple very complex real estate transactions. All of these tasks were handled quickly, professionally and at reasonable rates. As an entrepreneur I find new challenges every day and realize how essential it is to have a smart and honest advisor, like Kenneth, whom I can turn to.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Santa Ana, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
