I cannot say enough about the incredible support and assistance I received from Charles "Chip" Oxton. From the moment I reached out to him, he exhibited exceptional expertise, professionalism, and compassion in handling my custody. He ensured that my child's well-being was at the forefront of all our proceedings. I believe that what sets Chip apart is not just his exceptional legal skills but his remarkable qualities as a human being. He genuinely cares about his clients, which really mattered to me during an emotionally draining time. He was always honest and direct, even when it meant having difficult conversations. In addition to Chip, I had very nice interactions with other lawyers and assistants at his office. Feeling safe about being at a lawyer's office is reassuring in challenging times. In summary, if you find yourself in need of an attorney who has great legal skills but who is also an amazing person, I strongly recommend Chip! He had an immense impact on my life during one of the most challenging times I've ever faced.

When my husband passed away it was a shock. A friend realized that I was going to need a lawyer. I called Charles office in a panic and spoke with Beth. Without hesitation Charles was on the phone with me and after only 10 minutes he knew exactly what to do. He showed up for me! For 3 years, he and the team were my voice. It was a complicated, frustrating fight to the finish. Through the entirety of the pandemic, with court cases being pushed and dealing with multiple lawyers on the other side, Charles and team kept me calm, walked me through everything step by step. They made sure to answer every question, take every meeting and most importantly heard every word I said. Even when I was completely freaking out. Charles was my muscle. Professional, trustworthy, knowledgeable about the law. Charles and team are also compassionate, but tough when it comes to fighting for what is right. During the toughest time in my entire life, Charles and team were there for me. I could not have gotten through this without them.

I have had the good fortune of knowing Mr. Oxton for 26+ years. In that time, he has represented me on a few occasions as legal counsel in my child support/custody issues. His knowledge of family law is solid, but more importantly, he cared about me restoring my relationship with my children. Over the years, we have kept in close contact and our relationship has continued to evolve, from client, to that of a father figure. He has shown me how to be a better father and man just by seeing how he interacts with his children and loved one's. If it were not for my relationship with him, I would not have the relationship that I have with my children today. My relationship with Mr. Oxton inspired me to start a 501 (3) (c) non-profit program that mentor's youth in our local community with life, communication and financial literacy skills. I am thankful that I met him all those years ago. He continues to advise me on legal issues today with my businesses, and as good as he is as an attorney, he's an even better man

When I first started inquiring about lawyers, Attorney Robert Landheer's name emerged immediately. Several other lawyers highly recommended him, including my personal family lawyer, close friends who knew of him, and especially one very very close friend with whom I have composed and performed music for many many years. From my first meeting with Robert, he was kind, caring and listened with great detail. As a recording musician for over 40 years, I easily recognized a professional. Robert Landheer Esq. is one of the most caring, intelligent, and superlative professionals that I have ever encountered. Additionally, his assistant, attorney Keiran Schwoerke, with whom I have net several times in person and by phone, had exemplified the highest standards of professionalism through his acute awareness of details, his highly personable demeanor, and lastly, through his immediate responsiveness to all my needs. I would recommend with no reservation and total confidence, Attorney Robert Landheer, his assistant attorney Keiran Schwoerke and his entire staff. Thank you very much for everything. Ray

Robert and his team helped me to navigate a complex criminal case that spanned many months and involved multiple law enforcement agencies. Robert’s experience, talent, and expertise were instrumental in securing a favorable resolution. I was constantly impressed by the positive interactions he had with everyone involved in the legal process. It is no surprise to me that Robert is so well respected by law enforcement, prosecutors, and fellow attorneys. I appreciated Robert’s honesty and straightforward communication. He was clear with me at all times regarding the status of the case, the path forward, and the possible outcomes. Additionally, he treated me with a level of respect and compassion that helped me to feel at ease despite the seriousness of the situation. Robert’s patient approach and strategic thinking allowed him to resolve my case in a manner that was far better than I had thought possible. It was a pleasure working with Robert, Russel, and Keiran. Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Santa Barbara, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
