Mr. McMurray exceeded my expectation on a custody/visitation and child support matter. Going through a court process can be intimidating, extremely stressful and overwhelming, however, hiring Mr. McMurray was the absolute best thing I could have done for me and my children. I put my trust and faith in his law firm and he delivered exceptionally. If you are in search for an attorney to represent you, I highly recommended Mr. McMurray and his team.

Greg McMurray was a great find! A lawyer with impeccable credentials, known and respected by local lawyers and judges, with an approachable communication style that puts the client at ease while still conveying all the important information, extremely knowledgeable about the law, and experienced in how best to advocate for his clients. I wish I had found him sooner! He is worth every penny (saved me lots of money in the end). I would have used him in my family law case if I had known about him earlier. Greg defended me in a criminal case that resulted in all charges being dropped and my record left clear. It was a result that I deserved, but didn't believe I would receive. In fact, I wouldn't have, with a lesser advocate. Greg made me aware of the challenges in my case, what he saw as our path forward, and he made sure i was prepared at every stage. His communication style is clear and direct without being uncaring. He is an attorney one can trust!! Yes, I just said that, and I mean it. I have recommended Greg to my friend who has a complicated family law issue, and I highly recommend Greg McMurray to anyone looking for a quality attorney,

Mr. McMurray was my lawyer back in December of 2010 when I was arrested by the SB County Sheriff's department. I won't go into details, but I was in serious trouble and looking at some time behind bars. In short I began to turn my life around I got myself into some local programs to deal with my personal problems. Taking Mr. McMurray's advice I worked hard to improve my situation. Mr. McMurray was truthful and helpful through the entire process, including giving me a payment plan option which helped a lot. Because legal trouble can be expensive outside of hiring a lawyer. He went to bat for me with the DA and the Judge because I fulfilled my promise to keep myself on track. I ended up avoiding jail time all together and I haven't looked back since. Alcohol was a part of my story and I've been sober ever since in part due to Mr. McMurray and his work on my behalf. Simply put he was my advocate and he helped me present my case as someone who needed help, got it and then as someone who needed a chance to make good and I can happily say he got me a second chance.

A very good friend of mine referred me to Mr. McMurray. I will be forever grateful. He is an extremely intelligent person. He is diligent in his work and a true advocate for his clients. He takes a personal interest in understanding how you want to be represented. He then brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the law and manages your case in an expedient way. He is a genuinely nice person and the most professional and ethical attorney I have ever met.

Russel helped me so much through my case, he explained all the details and helped me understand what steps I had to do. He always kept me informed about new details and of I ever had a question he was easy to get a hold of. Couldn't have gotten through my case without him.

When I first started inquiring about lawyers, Attorney Robert Landheer's name emerged immediately. Several other lawyers highly recommended him, including my personal family lawyer, close friends who knew of him, and especially one very very close friend with whom I have composed and performed music for many many years. From my first meeting with Robert, he was kind, caring and listened with great detail. As a recording musician for over 40 years, I easily recognized a professional. Robert Landheer Esq. is one of the most caring, intelligent, and superlative professionals that I have ever encountered. Additionally, his assistant, attorney Keiran Schwoerke, with whom I have net several times in person and by phone, had exemplified the highest standards of professionalism through his acute awareness of details, his highly personable demeanor, and lastly, through his immediate responsiveness to all my needs. I would recommend with no reservation and total confidence, Attorney Robert Landheer, his assistant attorney Keiran Schwoerke and his entire staff. Thank you very much for everything. Ray

Robert and his team helped me to navigate a complex criminal case that spanned many months and involved multiple law enforcement agencies. Robert’s experience, talent, and expertise were instrumental in securing a favorable resolution. I was constantly impressed by the positive interactions he had with everyone involved in the legal process. It is no surprise to me that Robert is so well respected by law enforcement, prosecutors, and fellow attorneys. I appreciated Robert’s honesty and straightforward communication. He was clear with me at all times regarding the status of the case, the path forward, and the possible outcomes. Additionally, he treated me with a level of respect and compassion that helped me to feel at ease despite the seriousness of the situation. Robert’s patient approach and strategic thinking allowed him to resolve my case in a manner that was far better than I had thought possible. It was a pleasure working with Robert, Russel, and Keiran. I cannot thank them enough for their tireless efforts on my behalf and I highly recommend you seek their expert guidance if facing criminal charges.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Santa Barbara, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
