Reed is an incredibly capable and thorough attorney. His attention to detail is amazing and his ability to explain complex legal terms and requirements is superb. He is easy to work with and asks all the right questions to provide appropriate counsel. He provided great advice and produced succinct work products when he helped us with land use questions and environmental review. I highly recommend Reed especially in areas of municipal law and land use.

My experience with Reed Gallogly came working for the City of Santa Barbara. He was with the City Attorney's Office and was instrumental in upholding all of my Municipal Code Enforcement cases against a well know slum lord. Reed was extremely professional in his behavior, attitude and his appearance. His presence in any room was one of confidence and calmness. He was always well-informed of my cases and thoroughly researched them before meeting with the defendant and his team of lawyers. I knew he was prepared to defend the City or myself if need be, and I considered him an extremely valuable colleague. I have yet to work with another attorney (both inside and outside the City) that I have as much confidence in and respect for as Mr. Reed Gallogly. He would be a tremendous asset to any team.

Reed worked with me recently when I was dealing with an employee that was attempting to steal business from my insurance agency when he left to work at another brokerage firm. I was going to try and draft something myself but I was referred to Reed from a family friend and he jumped right in and took charge of the issue. He knew exactly what I needed to do and his fees was very reasonable to get the issue off my desk and into the proper hands. The action letter was drafted and sent to me for review and then sent out promptly to the party. After the issue was dealt with I didn't have any further issues with my prior employee and I sincerely appreciated Reed handling that issue for me. I would certainly work with him in the future for other legal needs, he was responsive and treated me very well in our interaction.

I've known Reed for a long time, and his sage advice pulled me through a contentious divorce very smoothly. He understood implicitly how important it was that I protect myself while avoiding escalation, and was always able to give practical advice in a way that did not dismiss the personal impact of everything I was going through. Specifically, I asked for his counsel during mediation and he helped me avoid common pitfalls to speed the process along in my own head, preventing me from asking for changes to an MSA that would have made the process much longer and may even have been disadvantageous in the long run. He also helped me handle harassment effectively without taking any legal action at all; this is what I mean by practical! It's thanks to his help that I got through it, instead of fretting about everything to this day.

I worked with Caleb at Baskin and Grant for a debt collection case in 2011. He kept me informed throughout the process, explained all avenues and possible outcomes and ultimately settled the issue in a way that was amenable to both parties. He, and others at the firm, approached the issue with great care, confidentiality and integrity.

I highly recommend John as an exceptional DUI lawyer. Before I even reached out, I received numerous positive recommendations about him. From my initial contact, John was responsive and attentive, listening carefully to my situation with genuine empathy. He was clear about what he could and couldn’t promise, providing transparent guidance throughout the process. Dealing with a DUI while managing personal crises, including my father's hospice care and my mother's dementia, was incredibly challenging. John’s sincere care and his focus on what was realistically achievable made a significant difference. He guided me through every step, from counseling to volunteer work, and his advice proved invaluable. John’s expertise was evident when he successfully handled my DMV hearing. He then achieved a remarkable result in the criminal court, securing a reduced charge that was better than expected. This outcome allows me a fresh start. John's professionalism, honesty, and dedication were beyond my expectations. His hard work has given me a second chance, and I am deeply grateful for his support and the outstanding results he delivered.

John absolutely went above and beyond helping me with my case. He was patient, compassionate, and empathetic. It is hard to find an attorney that genuinely has your well-being and best interest at heart, but I really felt John cared about getting me the best outcome possible. His guidance and support were immeasurably helpful. Thank you!

There are several lawyers who claim to specialize in vertical industries or segments of the law but few bring true passion to their specialty. I had the opportunity to work both as Angela's colleague in the solar industry where she led legal affairs and as a lawyer for our our Cleantech marketing services firm. She is the consummate legal professional and brings passion to the work she does to elevate the cleantech industry. I'd recommend Estriatus Law without hesitation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Santa Cruz, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
