I was driving 120 MPH when I was pulled over and arrested for DUI. It was passed midnight when the lights of the cop car flooded my rear view mirror. I knew I had one too many drinks and I knew I was going to jail. Still, I was hoping I could talk my way out of it. I answered their questions. It didn't help. My speech was slurred. I did their tests on the side of the road. I almost fell over a few times. With each second I could feel the jail closing in on me. The cops didn't care about me. They were so pissed I was driving so fast they couldn't wait to take me to jail. I was arrested and blew .12 twice into the breathalyzer. I thought it was over. I knew of Derek from other friends that had used him. They had their cases dismissed or walked away with very little. He wasn't cheap, but my friends swore by him. I saved every nickel and raised every dime I could to hire him. It was the best decision I've ever made. When I met with him he explained everything. He told me "you're paying me to do the worrying for you" and I truly felt he cared. I know he cared. The Torrance DA (Some woman named Gillian) wanted to send me to jail for months because of some rule that says if you're driving as fast as I was you do a minimum of 2 months jail. I couldn't believe it. Derek wasn't having it. He fought with them, but they wouldn't budge. It was take the jail or go to trial. We went to Trial. I was scared to death when the jury was picked. Then Derek started doing his thing. He showed the jury another side. He showed the cops didn't know what they were doing and that they were lying. They didn't need to lie, but they did. Derek was clearly the smartest guy in the room. Everything they threw at us Derek blasted. More than anything, Derek cared. He put his heart and soul into the case. He really cared what would happen to me. I wasn't just a client. He treated me like I was a member of his family on trial. The jury saw that and I won. MY CASE WAS DISMISSED!!!!!!!

We hired Derek on 2 separate occasions for a family member. One was a DUI and the other a DV charge. Despite being handed many difficult situations by the client, the judge and D.A., Derek was able to literally pull out a few miracles. The client was able to get very lenient outcomes. Derek is a fighter and likes to win. Even better he doesn't like to lose, so if you need a good lawyer who will fight for you, hire Derek.

I was dealing with a DUI refusal and I already have one DUI. Luckily Derek was referred to me and thanks to him my case was dismissed! He is tough and great at what he does, and I highly recommend him to any one in a similar situation.

When I got my dui, I was in shock. But not so much in shock that I didn’t think I could get out of it. Then reality hit hard and someone recommended Derek. Derek had no idea what he was getting when he took me on as a client. He was clear and concise. But more than anything, he was patient and he listened. Derek explained the same situation repeatedly, when I asked him to. He took my calls and answered my innumerable texts. He went above and beyond. Derek got me acquitted on the b count with a .12 BAC using an incredibly obscure and confusing defense. Eventually we settled for a wet reckless, but I got to keep my license. Before, during, and after, Derek was helpful and responsive. Only in retrospect do I see how miraculous he was in a situation that other lawyers wouldn’t have even understood. Derek really cares; he knows the law inside and out; and is totally relentless. But most of all, Derek is the absolute best criminal lawyer there is.

I was arrested for a DUI refusal and I immediately hired Derek to represent me and It was the best decision I could have possibly made. Derek was able to successfully get my charges knocked down to an exhibition of speeding charge. Through the whole process, Derek was always available and made sure to always clearly explain each step of the process to me. Thank you again Derek!

I had a truly difficult divorce case and Linda was an amazing attorney in every way. Neither one of us had any idea how the divorce would turn out to be so complicated and to this day I am in awe of how she protected my daughter and kept on top of the tedious separation process. The lessons I got from her I use even today in my professional and personal life and the ONLY thing I miss about my divorce is not seeing her anymore. She is a clear and brilliant individual and keeps herself informed about the legal trends and options. I did so much research to go with a solid and excellent attorney and to this day stand by that she was the best that I could have found. I always noticed how well respected she was by her peers and the judges in the court interactions and was happy to have her on my side. Overall, I am forever in her gratitude.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Santa Monica, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
