We hired Atty. Ben for an employment and labor case against a very high end well known celebrity and he did win my husband's case within a year. Atty Ben is very hardworking and he quickly answers all our questions, his approach is very professional and personal at the same time. He is a very honest lawyer and will tell you if you have a case or not. We are thankful for his dedication to his work regarding the case that is why my husband received the justice he deserved with his labor and employment case against his prominent employer.

I had a crazy case, with a pass employer, Ben was welling to taken on the case, He was not willing to take no for an answer, He was welling to throw the punches, I felt like he was the best choice for me and my case. I would not go with anyone else. Very well rounded, answered all my questions, rolled with the punches, well spoken, want to bat for me and my case, when it came time for offters on my case he was not letting them try to low ball me. In the end I just wanted to say Thank You, I could have not asked for anything better.

I consulted with Ben a few times while deciding on an attorney. He was very easy to get ahold of and always willing to answer any questions I had. He was very thorough in his explanation of things and very easy to talk to. I ultimately decided on representation closer to where I lived but I know Ben would have been a great choice as well. You will be in good hands with him.

Ben seemed very nice and took my case regarding unpaid wages. Once my employer sent him my personnel files, he contacted me and said my file is over 700 pages and he realized he did not have time for my case. My concerns are.. no matter what is in my personnel file, true or false, my employer is still obligated to pay me my unpaid wages.. so for some reason Ben became scared after receiving my file and dropped me. I found a new attorney who explained that my personnel file and any negative information in it does not excuse my employer from CA Labor Laws. Ben just did not seem aggressive and I don't think it is fair to drop a client like that for no real reasons. I would understand if my claim had no merit, but that is not what he told me.

I explained what had happened and Ben worked effortlessly, multi-tasking and explaining even re explaining my rights that were violated and the in and outs of the whole case making sure i understood. He's very easy going and easy to talk to, not intimidating or judge mental. He brought to my attention many violations and waited patiently while my son was screaming demanding my attention. He was willing to travel almost 2 hours to just talk to me and didn't ask for money as a matter of fact he helped me recover my security deposit from the people who were trying to steal it and didn't ask for any compensation because i didn't feel comfortable filing the suit even though i had a very good case with proof. No doubts in being awarded the courts favor i just didn't want to file my own reasons and he wasn't pushy or upset just very consistently respectful. He fought for my family and doesn't even know what i look like. Thank you very much and i hope you win the lottery because people like you deserve to reap what they sow and Ben Rothman delivers justice effortlessly, honestly and tirelessly. I found a attorney and a friend who listened to the explantions of personal problems that i was going through while these people were ripping me off he genuinely listened and stood up for me i'm for my family. We are forever thankful and wish it didn't take getting ignored by so many other lawyers who didnt call back or left me on hold after explaining everything to someone who probably pulled the phone away from their ear since they most didn't respond and made it clear they were not capable of even faking the level of professionalism and humanity. I wouldn't waist my time calling anyone else.

I had a truly difficult divorce case and Linda was an amazing attorney in every way. Neither one of us had any idea how the divorce would turn out to be so complicated and to this day I am in awe of how she protected my daughter and kept on top of the tedious separation process. The lessons I got from her I use even today in my professional and personal life and the ONLY thing I miss about my divorce is not seeing her anymore. She is a clear and brilliant individual and keeps herself informed about the legal trends and options. I did so much research to go with a solid and excellent attorney and to this day stand by that she was the best that I could have found. I always noticed how well respected she was by her peers and the judges in the court interactions and was happy to have her on my side. Overall, I am forever in her gratitude.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Santa Monica, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
