Choosing an attorney is like choosing a physician who must be well versed in the current techniques & laws. He/she must be trustworthy, responsible, empathetic, patient & a good, active listener. Hector C. Perez & Co. are the epitome of these characteristics. They are more than willing to accommodate my family & myself as to meeting times & places. They are reasonable & like a good, dependable doctor have become a close friend of the family, someone who really knows you &, therefore, truly represent you, professionally & earnestly, from the heart. Hector C. Perez & Co. have never failed my family or myself, they have stood the test of Time as invaluable, trusting attorneys & counselors in my family’s & my life.

Hector C. Perez made his mark as a successful lawyer in Los Angeles, and the reality for me and everybody else is that the clock stops for nobody. He now works as a counselor, assisting people with their urgent needs later in life, like Wills and Estates and related areas. He still does select representation in defending people against the government and the IRS. He proved very knowledgeable in Wills and Estates and demonstrated patience and sound judgement in explaining our various options. I highly recommend and endorse Hector C. Perez as an ethical and competent attorney, a professional who can be trusted to handle your legal matters with the utmost integrity.

Having purchased a business, we required legal assistance establishing the company as a close corporation. We were particularly impressed with Mr. Keating's firmness of legal counsel; he was genuinely invested in ensuring the decisions we made were well informed and legally in our best interests. We have attained a very high level of confidence in his practice ensuring a continuing relationship as the future deems necessary.

Alan Keating did a fantastic job while representing me on what could have been life changing charges. Alan did a great job communicating with the DA on multiple occasions, explained in detail the different possibilities of different options, and an overall inexpensive fee for his services. Alan's persistence paid off with an outstanding verdict of multiple felony charges dismissed. His charm and persistence went a long way with myself, my family, and the courts. Thanks again Alan. Highly recommended!

Gene is currently representing me in three business cases in LA Superior Court. He has done a great job in all three against two attorneys who are hell bent on destroying me and my business. He has used his 36 years of experience in these cases to shut them down every time they have tried something. They have made absolutely no headway in any of the cases and I am confident that I will win all three cases and that, in one of them, the Plaintiff will end up paying me damages and attorney fees. It is going to shock them when it happens because they don’t have any idea who they are dealing with. And this isn’t the first time I have seen this happen. A few years ago Gene represented me in my official capacity. Somebody brought a really ridiculous lawsuit against me as an individual and her attorney made all kinds of threats to the effect that I would be removed from my office and that his client would replace me. Gene just ignored the threats and kept things cool and calm on our side. He wrote excellent opposition papers filled with excellent research right on point. And then when we got to court, Gene just walked into Court, basically took over the courtroom. He took the other attorney back into the Judges office, and, in about thirty minutes, it was all over. We won and the other attorney and his client went home with their tails between their legs. That is how it works with Gene. He is not loud or crazy as many attorneys are. He calmly lets his knowledge and experience speak for him and, in the end, they go down in flames wondering what the heck happened to them. And all along the way he communicates with you on important matters. I know that no attorney has the time to let you know every little thing happening with your case. Because I trust him to come through in the end, I just stand back and let him do his job. That is hard to do for a lot of people but it pays off in the end. I very highly recommend him. You will not find a better attorney. Larry

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Seal Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
