Ms. Schilling is very nice in person but denied repeatedly that she had issues with her phone. There is no way to email her either. I was referred to her by the Lawyer Referral Service and California Rural Legal Aid. I have a long-term disability, which forced me to not be able to afford other attorneys. I called her again and again before seeing her and her phone kept ringing and not going to voicemail. Finally, after telling the Lawyer Referral service, Ms. Schilling called and set up an appointment to meet at her office. She showed me files from other clients that she was currently helping that looked over three feet wide. I paid her $250 and she asked for a few additional documents for me to get and drop off at her home. I was then able to leave her a voice message reminding her that I dropped off the papers and asked her to call. I called her four days later and her phone would either beep once and go silent or beep three times and disconnect. I again alerted the Lawyer Referral Service and tried calling several times before her phone actually worked and went to voice-mail. I left her a message telling her that I paid her $250, which for me is a lot and deserve to be updated about my case. She called back and sounded annoyed, essentially saying I need to be patient. When I finally connected, I asked for my money back and mentioned how my court hearing wasn't far away and that she should fix her phone issues. She again denied there has been an issue, claiming At&t fixed the issue. Due to limitations imposed by my disability, including financial limitations, I will probably lose custody of my son to a mom who is very unstable. The Lawyer Referral Service absolutely did nothing after repeated pleas to find me another low cost attorney. Lawyers should never be allowed to operate like Ms. Schilling does and if a potential client endures such an experience, the referral service should do whatever they can to help, rather than destroy families and relationships. I have now visited the Superior Court self-help center three times and the last young clerk was lecturing me about how I should have already filed my court papers. She treated me like I was an irresponsible child, even though she was young enough to be my granddaughter. She had no idea how I had done my due diligence in getting assistance, and thanks to Ms. Schilling and the Lawyer Referral Service, will most likely get further chastised by the judge. Shameful :(

ive been working with mrs schilling for well over a year now for half custody of my child. Nothing has been put into place. NOTHING AFTER A YEAR. Is she even a lawyer? or did i get scammed. She does not communicate and writes things on the filing papers WITHOUT your consent. She has messed this entire situation up for me. Multiple other lawyers and attorney's have told me this should have been resolved within a month. if that. This lady does not take you seriously and speaks to you like a child.

Jonathan Bowne came through – after contacting numerous attorneys he was among the few that responded to our representation request – most said they did not do contract litigation but Jonathan did and indeed he did – he responded immediately and after our initial phone conversation (by the way we never did actually meet in person) he laid out a excellent strategy – being an “old school” type of individual that was quite unusual for me to continue with someone “sight unseen” ! No matter since within days he was able to settle out of court for us with only the agreed upon original invoice as our only and final payment – the litigant tried to sue for work not performed (which was only one reason not to continue with him) – the only monies really out were the attorney fees and legal filings - no one wants that but we had to defend ourselves or lose much more – even though this case should never had happen in the first place we were so glad to have it behind us – in other words “WE WON”! If you ever need a knowledgeable business and / or construction attorney who will respond promptly to your communications in a friendly manner you should call the Law Office of Jonathan M. Bowne of Sonoma County!

Mary Lu Hilberg took my writ of habeas case accusing another attorney by the name of Monte Hanson of . Negligent representation. This is very brave and noble to do within the attorney ranks. As it is very true that the attorneys like to look out for one another. Even when neglect or plain bad representation is written all over the wall. It seems like yesterday, but I guess it was quite a long time ago 23 years. It was 1991 when I chose Monty Hanson to represent me as a private attorney in the Sonoma County courts. I was 29 years old and I had a bit of drugs and an unloaded gun . Monte Hanson got me 14 plea bargained to 9 years, got out in 5. First time in prison. I got out in 97 got married and have been working steady ever since. Mary Lou Hillburn reviewed the case and found a slew of mistakes. Therefore she found it reasonable to challenge the misrepresentation. She fought the case for years on appeal. We did not win but I have the most dedication and appreciation to Mary Lou Hill Berg's demeanor and stubborn stances to do the right thing . This is an attorney that will not lie to you and will go to bat for the best outcome that she's able to get.good luck in your battles

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sebastopol, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
