Omar is the guy you want in your corner when it comes to legal problems with cannabis. He is super knowledgable, dedicated, hard-nosed (he will get you THE best deal possible). His pricing is fair. He is also kind and thoughtful at a time when you feel most stressed out. I highly recommend him.

My faith in the California judicial system and my absolute belief in the integrity of law enforcement was shattered 6/2010 when I was arrested for delivering cannabis to medically qualified patients. I followed California state law, paid taxes, and was very up front with local politicians. None of that mattered. Solano county said "No medical marijuana here, we don't care what California state law is.". True to their word I was arrested, my husband was arrested and we came home from dinner surrounded by guys in bullet proof vests. NEVER had I been in any trouble before (I was 50 yrs old at time) and I was TERRIFIED! After much research and after speaking to a number of attorneys I decided to trust Omar and it was definitely the best decision! His education, knowledge and experience is outstanding. It took a few years to get through this mess and he was with me the whole time. Anyone who is knowlegeable of Solano County's position on MMJ, and especially in Vacaville, knows this was a very difficult battle. Thanks Omar! Hire him, you will be very glad you did!

I was arrested in Sausalito CA for possession of 167 pounds of cannabis and 3 ½ grams of ecstasy. I thought my life was over and I was preparing myself for jail. I researched a dozen lawyers, interviewed three and then I found Omar. Within minutes of our first meeting I felt there might be some hope and I knew he was the person I needed to work with. He was professional, very smart and easy to talk to. After we started working together I also realized he has integrity and is highly respected among his peers. Omar coached me through every part of the process. I never had any uncertainty going into court. His office support staff is thorough and outstanding. After an eight month process I was awarded three years felony probation with a good chance after probation the felony will be reduced so it doesn't show on my record. Yes, no jail time, just probation! It even gets better. During sentencing Omar argued that I still be allowed to drink alcohol and use medical cannabis while on probation and the judge agreed. My probation officer told me he has never seen anyone on probation allowed these privileges. The only mistake you can make hiring Omar is not listing to his coaching. I am one GRATEFUL client.

Through two and a half years of litigation and processing, Omar Figueroa kept me informed every step of the way. In the end, my charge was reduced substantially and I was given only minor conditions that I was able to carry out very quickly. Omar and his team never lost track of me and fought through poor offers by the DA , never letting me settle for an unfair ruling. I am very indebted to Omar for getting me through my small ordeal and making me feel comfortable throughout the process.

Omar has represented me for over a year in a high-profile case that is a litmus test for how local courts treat those who put their bodies on the line to defend the earth. Not only has he been a very effective representative, showing great competence, skill, and instincts at key moments in the case, but he has been exceptionally generous with his time. This is a great lawyer who is in the game for all the right reasons.

Mr. Jacobs assisted me with handling my mother's estate when she passed away earlier this year, then prepared a Living Trust and associated estate planning documents for my husband and me. Throughout the whole process I was very impressed with Mr. Jacobs' ability to explain complex legal issues in plain english. He seemed to really know his stuff, and took the time to be sure we understood everything as clearly as possible (even though we were paying him a flat fee, not hourly billing). I also really liked the fact that he runs a small, relaxed office, and often answers his own phone. Try to get that at a big law firm! In short, Ken Jacobs is not your typical lawyer, and I highly recommend him to anyone who needs a Living Trust or Will, or to handle an Estate.

Jonathan Bowne came through – after contacting numerous attorneys he was among the few that responded to our representation request – most said they did not do contract litigation but Jonathan did and indeed he did – he responded immediately and after our initial phone conversation (by the way we never did actually meet in person) he laid out a excellent strategy – being an “old school” type of individual that was quite unusual for me to continue with someone “sight unseen” ! No matter since within days he was able to settle out of court for us with only the agreed upon original invoice as our only and final payment – the litigant tried to sue for work not performed (which was only one reason not to continue with him) – the only monies really out were the attorney fees and legal filings - no one wants that but we had to defend ourselves or lose much more – even though this case should never had happen in the first place we were so glad to have it behind us – in other words “WE WON”! If you ever need a knowledgeable business and / or construction attorney who will respond promptly to your communications in a friendly manner you should call the Law Office of Jonathan M. Bowne of Sonoma County!

Bob Haroche, is, in short, an exceptional attorney- he is brilliant, thoughtful, conscientious, exceedingly mindful of a client's budget, tactful (but snarky when necessary), highly effective, and an absolute pleasure to work with. Bob has an uncanny ability to assess the most effective course of action in a litigation, and wastes no time honing a strategy for a swift resolution. We have worked with Bob on numerous occasions- he has never failed to resolve our issues positively, effectively, and rapidly. We are fortunate to have such a talented attorney in our area- I refer Bob to all my clients (all of whom walk away impressed), and always look forward to an opportunity to work with him. Working with Bob Haroche is like watching a master at his craft- like playing one-on-one with Michael Jordan- he is, simply, The Best.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sebastopol, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
