We lost our battle in court and he didn't really do much. He was always late in court and would not answer his phone a lot of times. Very unprofessional.

What a mistake it was hiring this firm. They claim to work as a group but when it came to my case they sent an Associate who had no idea what she was doing in court. Of course, I lost the case and wasted all my money. I regret ever hiring these people.

I hired Mr Sperling as a self-proclaimed aggressive litigator to set safe custody boundaries in a matter involving documented domestic violence, child abuse and substance abuse. That one of his first consult questions was about ex's $$ resources should have been a warning but I was focused on securing safety for my children. His representation consisted of dramatic posturing and expensive weekly 'ex parte' hearings that accomplished nothing. The writing and client contact was assigned to his overburdened legal assistant. The three times he returned my calls, his demeanor was dismissive and it was evident they were not taking place in a professional setting. He showed up to court unfocused, clearly not even having read what was in the documents produced by his office, and opposing counsel capitalized. Five weeks into representation, at 4:30 p.m. the day before the 8 a.m. trial that should have secured our safety, reasonable child support, and full custody, he informed me the 15k retainer was gone (that's $3,000/ week he spent with no benefit) and demanded another $15k to show up for the trial the next morning. When I couldn't raise that much with less than 24 hours notice, he subbed himself out, leaving me unprepared to represent myself or find anyone else to. The result was devastating, requiring significant legal effort by others to rectify, but most heartbreaking is the additional physical and emotional damage to the children that therapeutic support can't undo.

Mitchell Sperling represented me in my move-away from California to the east coast. I was representing myself and very nervous. My spouse's attorney was aggressive and made me think it was impossible to get a move away granted by the judge. When I met with Mr. Sperling he immediately assured me that he would do everything possible to help me achieve my goal, with as little delay and cost to as me as possible. Not only was he always responsive to my questions, but he represented me in court effectively and I was granted the move away! His office and his staff are truly wonderful and I wouldn't have been able to do it without their help. I would highly recommend Mitchell Sperling and his law firm.

Mitchell Sperling helped my wife with her family law case. Mitchell Sperling was successful in negotiating a lump-sum child support payment that helped pay for tuition and other child rearing expenses. Mitchell Sperling used has many years of family law to win her case. We are both very appreciative of Mitchell Sperling's great work! Sincerely, JMB

Aidin is and forever will be my hero. I was dealing with the WORST bullying and harassment at work I’d ever experienced. I was then re-victimized when I was terminated for reporting it. Aidin took the time to actually listen to me as I explained the abuse and manipulation that was taking place there. For the first time I felt like I was not just being heard but fully understood. I am very grateful to him and Diana for representing me and I’m very happy with the outcome they achieved for my case. Now I have the closure and the means to move on to the next phase of my life. If you are considering a firm to represent you this is the one. I highly recommend them. Another special thanks to Marisol who was always so kind and helpful on the phone. Thank you Starpoint!

Received a traffic ticket (Radar/Laser speed trap) and hired Phil to defend me. I gave him the details of my case and after delaying the process (which was intentional), Phil personally met me in court to defend me. He prepared me in advance what to expect and prepared me for testimony. Once trial began, his questioning of the officer was top notch, and was so effective, not only did he get the case dismissed and my ticket refunded, he impressed others in the court room waiting for their case to be called (they actually came up to him to say so outside the courtroom). I highly recommend Phil for his professionalism, communication and results!

Phil was great throughout my experience--he handled the case turnkey, but also took time to explain details of the process, options, etc. During my court appearance he was considerate of my priorities, and advanced a number of thoughtful ideas in my defense. Ultimately he succeeded in getting the case dismissed, which I had not realistically expected to be possible.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sherman Oaks, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
