Extremely disappointed with The Hayes Law Firm due to their lack of communication and transparency. Despite numerous follow-up emails and phone calls, I received no response regarding a case I was involved in as a third party. Additionally, I never received any formal written notification which is required by the probate process. The only information I obtained was through the LA County Superior Court website, where I had to purchase the documents myself. Upon reviewing some of the documents, I discovered that they falsely claimed that notifications were mailed to my agent and me, which we never received. While I understand that I am not a client, I expected the decency of a timely response and for mandated probate procedures to be properly followed. Moreover, although I am not an expert in probate, I observed that their team handled the case inefficiently, both in terms of cost and time. As the buyer, this inefficiency did not directly impact me since I was not in a rush to close escrow, but it certainly added unnecessary costs to the estate. When it came to the confirmation hearing, no one from their firm physically appeared in court, and their attorney called in seeming disorganized at times as he answered several questions incorrectly, which was embarrassing for his client. While the firm may be capable of handling general estate planning and straightforward cases, I would advise seeking counsel elsewhere for complex probate litigation issues.

I had a very productive consultation call with Attny Bill Hayes to discuss my loved one's estate details following their passing. He was immediately helpful in walking me through key information about the overall process and my specific circumstances. He was both professional and warm, illustrating his thorough approach, while bringing the human element to our conversation. While I am still determining my legal support needed, I would highly recommend you speak with him when exploring estate related attorneys.

I needed some advice on a complex family issue and William Hayes was kind enough to talk it through with me for free. He is thoughtful, generous and not just out to make a buck. He gave me some great advice, even when it meant I didn't end up needing his services for my issue! When I am ready to set up my estate he is who I will be calling.

My case was in really bad shape, the other party secretly filed for sole everything! without my knowledge, then lived with me for 2 years and never mentioned a thing. When we split they claimed to the courts I was never involved in my childs' life and never responded to the paternity papers. They used every dirty trick you can think of, I had back to back Temporary Restraining Orders being thrown at me, at the same time finding out about another request in our case. The other side wanted to zero out all my time with a default judgement to lock it in. I had only days to reply and went with a family recommendation. This was a mistake! I didn't research the guy, I didn't feel comfortable with his laid back game plan. In fact, he had no plan, and did more harm than good. I wish I would have contacted a serious attorney like Jesse. But I didn't, instead I researched and contacted legal aid organizations. Another mistake. They did help me understand the legal process and really made me feel like I was part of the case, but in fact I see now after using them so many times, they are just lazy and wanted me to write my own case, while they polished it up with legal jargon. After wasting my time and money with those downtown organization and still getting hassled by the other parties unemployed boyfriend and the drunk step dad, the final straw came when they started punishing my daughter for not wanting to call the boyfriend dad. I FINALLY CALLED JESSE! I looked around, did my research. I knew what to look for in an attorney now, I wanted someone who knows the way around the courtroom, who's not afraid to square up in the hallways with other parties attorneys. Jesse didn't let us get pushed around, I immediately got results at custody court and quickly retained Jesse Verdin for my child support case. When I called him, I was a few weeks away from a serious court date. We met up at my conveniences near my house, I have a 5 inch thick case file over the last 4 years. Jesse let me explain everything I went through in the case file, I showed him the main points and he saw my side. Jesse quickly picked up on the lies and mistakes made in the case and new exactly what to do next. Like I said he got IMMEDIATE RESULTS! I couldn't be happier with the way my daughter and mine needs are being represented now. I recommend Jesse to everyone I know and meet. If your taking the time to read reviews like I did, then trust me and go with Jesse Verdin, make whatever sacrifices you need to for you and your family. From my own personal experiences the family legal system is completely flawed and bias towards the stigmatization with fathers in court. Don't get discouraged, your kids need you in their life, Call Jesse to help fight for you in court!

I hired Jesse to represented me in my recent divorce, and I could not be more grateful. Having Jesse's knowledge and guidance made all the difference and removed the stress from a difficult situation. Jesse fought for me, cared about the outcome, and made sure I did not settle for less than what was mine. He was always honest with me in regards to what to expect, and no matter what we went through he was right every single time. My case was complicated, and the fact that he was never thrown a curve ball shows his years of experience with family law in Southern California court rooms. I am incredibly happy with his work, and would highly recommend him to anyone.

He is the best out there. Lots of experience and still very attentive to his clients. As a lady going through the most difficult time in my life, he was understanding, patient, and trustworthy with all my concerns. He was on top of my paperwork/concerns,, he was a team player, always out looking for my best interest and that of my son's life. I highly recommend him!

Mr. Shumake is a brilliant, quick thinker who doesn't back down. After helping me with my Counterclaim defense, the Plaintiff withdrew their Complaint as she could see her case had no merit. I highly recommend him.

I'm delighted to have Mr. Bunn involved in a potentially difficult legal estate-related family situation across three states. He has been thorough and complete in his representation of my interests and keeping me informed of my responsibilities and obligations. I couldn't have completed the task without his help. He came highly recommended from another attorney and choosing him was a sound decision on my part. It's always great to know someone who really knows his field!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of South Pasadena, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
