Pros
1
Highly experienced and knowledgeable in handling personal injury and workers' compensation cases
“John Carty represented me in a personal injury case. The insurance company involved was giving me the run around and doing everything except settling the case. I hired John and within a week Allstate insurance wrote out a check to me for the policy's maximum amount.”
2
Responsive and keeps clients informed throughout the process
“Everyone there has been great, keeping me informed, answering questions, and ensuring that I get quality medical care while I'm injured.”
3
Achieves favorable outcomes and settlements for clients
“My settlement (out of court) actually ended up being two settlements. The first was for the maximum amount of the driver's insurance coverage. Then, at that point, John went further and got a second settlement from my own insurance coverage.”
4
Compassionate and makes clients feel supported
“I had no worries, and was able to just focus on getting well.”
5
Efficient and able to resolve cases quickly
“Since I had been out of work for awhile I really appreciated how fast he settled my case.”
Cons
1
Potential issues with communication and transparency
“I am not saying you will find a better lawyer what I am saying is at least look John looks out for John he strongly urged me to settle for less than half of what we were seeking and that was with permanent partial disability and life altering surgeries.”
2
Concerns about the lawyer's priorities and alignment with the client's best interests
“By the time we were close to settling it was clear to me John was working closer with the insurance company then with myself he refused to seek compensation for out-of-pocket prescription medicine prescribed by workers compensation doctors.”

This review has been a long time coming, my husband worked on a job for only THREE days. Due to the lack of care for their workers safety he was exposed to hydrofluoric acid which caused a need for a partial amputation of his fingers. He was ultimately let go from his job, which had be done the day we took him to the hospital and learned he needed surgery to remove the exposed body part. He was left jobless and unable to use his hands, only given a door dash order to ease the finances we were dealing with that night. You learn a lot about how much you really love someone when you become their hands and only source of income. I called a few lawyers and had been handled like I was dumb or wrong for handling the situation the way we did. After finally calling carty law I was treated like I had done the right thing, when our case was handed to Michael who I cannot say enough good things about. He made sure to handle my husband who btw is not the most educated with dignity and respect. With my husbands approval allowed me into his office so that I can take notes or have the opportunity to translate what was being said. He was very open and honest with every single page we were given or had signed. And really in truth we as a family felt very protected by him. In my experience most lawyers have an end all goal of making as much money as possible for themselves, at the end of the day the amount Micheal takes home compared to what we take home was minimal at most. We cannot express our gratitude enough. It's great finding a lawyer that will be a guard dog for you at the end of the day. If you really need someone that is 100% on your side this is the man for that job. THANK YOU so much for being our lawyer.

I found him on the internet, and I decided to give him a call. During our first conversation on the phone, he told me what he would do for me. After my first visit at his office, he guided me through. Afterwards, he kept me updated regularly up until the day of the court hearing.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Stockton, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
