Colleen was always professional and passionate in her work on my case. When necessary, she was aggressive on my behalf yet she always showed great empathy and compassion for what I was going through. Finalizing my divorce took an extremely long time, and there were several instances when I thought I could not continue, but Colleen Patricia and Staff always assured me that she would fight to secure the best outcome for me. The Judgement I was awarded was proof that she not only had the experience, but also the dedication and drive to get me what I deserved. The truth will always prevail. I would not hesitate to use her services again or recommend her to others. Thank you, Colleen! With love, Lisa

Initially I hired a different divorce attorney but when she found out who my ex had hired she immediately advised me to contact Colleen. She told me Colleen and Pat had much greater experience with more difficult cases. I am sure glad I was referred to them From my initial meeting with Colleen I knew she was compassionate but also was tough as nails. She always let me feel that she had everything under control and was not fazed at all by the opposing attorney. While the other attorney was pushing for reconciliation, Colleen knew what was best for me. Colleen always returned my texts and would give me detailed responses to my questions. In the end when I was going to settle by giving my ex more than we had initially agreed on Colleen put her foot down and told his attorney we were definitely not. And you know what? They didn’t push it. I’m thrilled with the outcome and couldn’t be happier for hiring Barberis and Barberis. Everyone in the office were very helpful and if you are fortunate to hire Colleen as your attorney you will know you’ve got someone on your side.

I hired Colleen Barberis back in spring 2017. She is a very nice attorney, but the competance and due dilligence was severly lacking. There were many, many thing that were mishandled including: a large issue with the way a domestic violence situation was reported to her, yet it got turned around on me! Many, many email from opposing counsel carlessly forwarded to me with no comment or question. The billing situation is a mess and lastly, she never, not once discussed with me hiw the changing tax laws in 2019 would effect my case and how to strategize. There never was a strategy.

Colleen mishandled my case. Many documents were produced with errors. Every time I pointed out errors I got stern emails from her office defending the quality of their work. In every case I would end up getting charged for correcting their errors. She also did not actually perform work she told me she had done. After I got fed up and fired her she ignored my requests for arranging to get my client file back.

Colleen worked with me through a very difficult legal situation. Not only was she professional, her expertise was quite impressive. She was relentless in her drive and determination to secure the best outcome for me. When I was nervous, her personal touch and compassion eased my nerves and gave me confidence. Colleen is as good as it gets. I was so lucky to have enlisted the services of their law firm. I would recommend her law firm without reservation.

I consulted this lawyer. I have not hired her yet as my timing is off. I find her extremely knowledgeable, quick witted, had immediate correct answers to my questions and feel she would look out for my best interests in my case and take a personal interest because she cares about standing up for what is right.

Robert and Michelle are the best of the best when it comes to attorneys. I had a pretty complicated case that I needed a lot of help on. It seemed like an impossible task for them but they were able to solve it for me within a few months. They are professional, knowledgeable, and experienced. You can’t go wrong with this law firm. Thank you!

I met Michelle over five years ago at Men's Central Jail while I was there to notarize an inmate. After a pleasant interaction, she took my card and promised to use my services. True to her word, Michelle contacted me, and we have been working together ever since. Michelle is an exceptional attorney, dedicated to vigorously defending her clients. Her commitment to their cases is evident. I can see that her clients greatly appreciate her hard work and unwavering support on their behalf. - The Document Diva

I have some issues on my credit report that are illegally on there and I am working on their removal. I have the evidence that they are being falsely reported and Shiva has been completely responsive whenever I email him, he gets back to me immediately, and he solves the issues and does not leave me hanging. If you want an attorney who will help you solve your issues, he is the go to person who can get things done. I really appreciate his professionalism, responsiveness, and extreme care when it comes down to things that must be taken cared of. I highly recommend him and would give him a BILLION STARS if I could.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Torrance, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
