Pros
1
Experienced and knowledgeable attorney with a good understanding of how judges tend to rule
“He is not the one deliberately delaying our divorce, far from it. He has been practicing law in our area for decades, makes it a point to familiarize himself with how judges tend to rule (as any good lawyer should), and has provided me with sound legal advice throughout this divorce.”
2
Ethical, fair, and reasonable in his approach
“He is not one of those lawyers who will simply take your money and allow you to pursue a personal vendetta, so if you are looking for that kind of lawyer, keep looking. As other reviewers have already said, he is fair, reasonable, ethical, responsive, cares about his clients, and tough when warranted.”
3
Effective at achieving timely resolutions and avoiding unnecessary legal fees
“Mr Gerber used his outstanding negotiation skills and experience to bring about fast resolutions and avoid running up unnecessary fees that would have resulted from drawn out litigation.”
4
Provides personalized attention and support to clients
“Unlike the "nothing personal its just business" lawyers that we all know , Don takes a personal interest in your case as he did mine.”
Cons
1
Lack of responsiveness and delays in handling cases
“Each time I would call to inquire about the update of my case, I was told by his staff that he was on a "High profile case" and couldn't get to my case yet.”
2
Unprofessional conduct in court
“Came to court disheveled & unshaven. His secretary is a crazy nightmare of a woman. Refused to let me speak to him and lied about almost everything.”
3
Failure to file documents and prepare properly for court
“Gerber did not file court papers timely. Always late or omitted. Didn't make good arguments. Used the excuse that he was caring for his wife -who had a head injury - as a reason he wasn't prepared for court.”

I was referred to Mr Gerber when I needed the services of a divorce attorney, and was never sorry to have chosen his office during the ensuing process. If you need a Team to fight for every contingency that inevitably comes up, and you want to be treated as a Real Person by a Real Person, don’t hesitate to contact his office. Wise council, honesty, reliability, and with a genuine flair for communication, I am so happy I chose Team Gerber to guide and mentor me through the process. I wholeheartedly give Attorney Gerber my highest recommendation.

Mr. Gerber represented me over the course of the last few years in my divorce and child support hearings. He is not your typical attorney that will nickel and dime you for every phone call, email, or letter involving your case. He was professional, courteous and reasonable in his efforts and demands, being extremely knowledgeable of the laws and how judges tend to lean in the various courts, as to not waste my money, time or efforts in a battle. He is fair and looks out for your best interest, as well as that of any children involved in ones divorce. His friendly staff is respectful of your circumstances and eager to support and help you in anyway they can. His paralegal is also very well-versed in family law having many years of experience and eager to help you along the way. Without a doubt, I would highly recommend Donald Gerber to represent you and your family law matters.

I am mainly writing this review in response to Anonymous' negative review dated June 4, 2018 (he was not the one who hired Mr. Gerber, as he is my lawyer), as I am his ex and would like to point out that, as everyone knows, there are two sides to every story, especially in a divorce case. Of course everyone can have their own opinion, but to review someone who is not your own lawyer is definitely suspect and open to judgment. If anything, Mr. Gerber has done everything possible to get our divorce finalized, in order to avoid trials and added costs. He is not the one deliberately delaying our divorce, far from it. He has been practicing law in our area for decades, makes it a point to familiarize himself with how judges tend to rule (as any good lawyer should), and has provided me with sound legal advice throughout this divorce. He is not one of those lawyers who will simply take your money and allow you to pursue a personal vendetta, so if you are looking for that kind of lawyer, keep looking. As other reviewers have already said, he is fair, reasonable, ethical, responsive, cares about his clients, and tough when warranted. I would also like to note that if you have to keep stating in your review that it's "honest", then maybe there's a reason for that. Also, just take a look at my ex's other reviews and you will get a sense of what kind of person he is.

I have used Don over 10 yrs now. He has been a great attorney for my family and I. He's always on his toes on how to make things easier on my end and not stress out. I have also recommended plenty of friends and family members and they all had the best experience with Don, after dealing with plenty of other attorneys and had a bad experience with them. He's by far the best attorney I have deal with. I would 100% recommend Don Gerber for your family case. Also, the staff is awesome Tina and Amanda make me feel very important when I call and come in, Always helping me out on any issues I bring to them. Great People overall in this office.

I consulted this lawyer. I have not hired her yet as my timing is off. I find her extremely knowledgeable, quick witted, had immediate correct answers to my questions and feel she would look out for my best interests in my case and take a personal interest because she cares about standing up for what is right.

I met Michelle over five years ago at Men's Central Jail while I was there to notarize an inmate. After a pleasant interaction, she took my card and promised to use my services. True to her word, Michelle contacted me, and we have been working together ever since. Michelle is an exceptional attorney, dedicated to vigorously defending her clients. Her commitment to their cases is evident. I can see that her clients greatly appreciate her hard work and unwavering support on their behalf. - The Document Diva

I have some issues on my credit report that are illegally on there and I am working on their removal. I have the evidence that they are being falsely reported and Shiva has been completely responsive whenever I email him, he gets back to me immediately, and he solves the issues and does not leave me hanging. If you want an attorney who will help you solve your issues, he is the go to person who can get things done. I really appreciate his professionalism, responsiveness, and extreme care when it comes down to things that must be taken cared of. I highly recommend him and would give him a BILLION STARS if I could.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Torrance, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
