I had a very bad experience with Nicole Stednitz. She misrepresented my legal situation in order to get my business. After receiving a favorable order prior to having met her, she told me to file for a trial that took away my favorable orders, costing over $16,000 when she promised it would be under $2500 and which I later found out should never have been filed. She also charged hundreds for driving to the courthouse. For example, for one 15-minute hearing she arrived both late and unprepared to, she charged 4.1 hours. In small claims court where she sued to recover all of her inflated billing, she argued the 4.1 hours included her travel time and didn’t dispute the hearing itself took 15 minutes. Unfortunately, the judge awarded her the full amount. I’ve had other family law attorneys and was not prepared for a large percentage of attorney fees to go to traveling as none of my other attorneys charged for their travel, let alone more than the hearing itself. Also, each email costs 20% of her billable hour, even if it is one word. One email I sent had an attachment for which she charged hundreds of dollars for reviewing even though she didn’t seem to be familiar with what I had emailed her. Between emails and transportation, my retainer drained quickly each month and needed replenishing, without seeing any real progress in my case. I disputed her overcharges, didn’t hear from her for over three years until she suddenly sued me in small claims court charging thousands in interest the judge threw out but unfortunately, she got away with a lot I dispute is owed to her. She didn’t seem to care about me or my child and situation, but only about billing unreasonably. I personally regret hiring her and the bad outcome her representation resulted in.

I cannot thank Nicole enough for what she and Stuart have done for my family. They both fought for me and my child. Nicole definitely went above and beyond. She made sure I was heard and made sure I got what I wanted and my child needed. My motion wasn’t an easy case. Thank you Nicole for my child’s happiness.

Ms. Stednitz helped me with my post dissolution issue. My ex and his attorney were very difficult to deal with. Ms. Stednitz remained calmed and focused on our final goal. She guided me through the process and I am glad I listened to her advice. The issue went to the court and judge ruled in my favor on several matters.

I found Nicole to be very helpful, timely, friendly, and understanding. She was very accommodating and we were able to accomplish tasks even when I was overseas. Nicole checked in with me on a regular basis, providing updates, making sure the process moved along, giving suggestions and options whenever needed. She always explained everything clearly. I really appreciated all she did on my behalf and would recommend her to anyone needing a family lawyer.

I consulted this lawyer. I have not hired her yet as my timing is off. I find her extremely knowledgeable, quick witted, had immediate correct answers to my questions and feel she would look out for my best interests in my case and take a personal interest because she cares about standing up for what is right.

I met Michelle over five years ago at Men's Central Jail while I was there to notarize an inmate. After a pleasant interaction, she took my card and promised to use my services. True to her word, Michelle contacted me, and we have been working together ever since. Michelle is an exceptional attorney, dedicated to vigorously defending her clients. Her commitment to their cases is evident. I can see that her clients greatly appreciate her hard work and unwavering support on their behalf. - The Document Diva

I have some issues on my credit report that are illegally on there and I am working on their removal. I have the evidence that they are being falsely reported and Shiva has been completely responsive whenever I email him, he gets back to me immediately, and he solves the issues and does not leave me hanging. If you want an attorney who will help you solve your issues, he is the go to person who can get things done. I really appreciate his professionalism, responsiveness, and extreme care when it comes down to things that must be taken cared of. I highly recommend him and would give him a BILLION STARS if I could.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Torrance, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
