I am writing this as an extremely satisfied and grateful client of Ethan Birnberg. Ethan was beyond knowledgeable about bankruptcy and patiently talked me through all the relevant aspects I needed to consider with my case. He graciously made himself available, even with impromptu and very time-sensitive questions/need for sound advice. I really appreciated his kind demeanor, advocacy, support, encouragement, professionalism, and clear communication during one of the hardest times of my life. Ethan had my back and after my first consultation with him, I immediately knew he was the best attorney I could ever have the good fortune of finding. I wholeheartedly recommend Ethan Birnberg—his skill set, advice, and ability to create a positive outcome for me were priceless. I can’t imagine being in better hands with anyone else. Ethan is the real deal!

First, we would like to thank the Porter Simon Law Firm, especially Attorney Kelley R. Carroll and the amazing Staff at Porter Simon for taking such good care of us during the entire process. The Porter Simon Law Firm was recommended to us by a Corporate Attorney that I personally worked with for over 20 years on Corporate matters. As always, he gave outstanding advice, we could not possibly have been more satisfied with the Porter Simon Law Firm and specifically Kelly Carroll. The minute we met Kelly he immediately put us at ease with his relaxed manner and great personality. Kelly has a real knack for explaining things in detail, while speaking in layman's terms that are very simple to understand. His knowledge was very impressive of not only California State Law but other states as well. One of the most impressive points is that Kelly and the Staff did every single thing they said they would do, when they said they would do it and in the manner they said they would. At the same time they were all very friendly and pleasant to work with. Finally, the Fee we were charged for the services that were provided was extremely reasonable. If you are in need of an outstanding Law Firm we highly recommend the Simon Porter Law Firm.

My current attorney, Eve Gravell, announced she was retiring. Traci Mason sat joined one of Eve and my sessions. Traci immediately struck me as good hearted. Soon after, Eve closed her private practice and retired briefly after joining Porter Simon again. With my divorce unfinished, I spoke with Traci who seemed confident in helping my case to completion, so we proceeded. Traci and I experienced challenges together, so parted ways. I continued to try and resolve my case. Traci and I later spoke and in the end, she offered help when I needed it most. Traci has a unique and beautiful way about her; she is knowledgable and leads from her heart, two important qualities to smooth the arduous process of divorce. I learned a lot about communication and relationships through this experience. I'm grateful for Porter Simon, Eve and Traci. On that last day, I was thankful to have Traci by my side.

Over a year ago I contacted Porter Simon Law office because I had been duke by a heavy equipment dealer in California to the tune of half million for a new D5 Catapiller. I had never met the attorney I was referred to because I am a resident of Washington state. Ravn Whitington graciously took our case. Ravn was very patient, it took over a year but he was able to recover all the funds plus fees and interest. Hopefully I will be able to thank him in person someday. Thank you Ravn and staff.

What took Mario 20 mins would have taken me 2 hrs+ on Turbo Tax to do. Mario is friendly, professional, and most importantly, knowledgeable. By the end he practically forced me to take home more money than I was expecting, lol! I will definitely be back next year for his service. I highly recommend him.

It was a long road and a very complicated case. Jude stayed with it, through the frustration and my stubbornness. It all worked out in the end. We appreciate his hard work and commitment.

I don’t know where to begin! Jude is an absolutely amazing lawyer! I wouldn’t recommend anyone else in the area! He is very efficient, reliable, and not afraid to tell you what’s up! I would have thrown out 9 years of my life but he was an absolute legend and I only did 6 months, which I deserved. None the less, almost 10 years later still helped out very much with getting those charges expunged and turning the page to an old chapter of my life. Absolute legend! Thank you!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Truckee, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
