Lydia has been a blessing for my kids and I during a very contentious divorce. She has not only helped me legally and professionally she has given me hope when I needed it the most. She is a saint to work in a business when lives get shattered and the ugliest sides of human nature come out. I highly recommend her!

Lydia is an exceptional family law attorney- she is brilliant, fearless, and dedicated to helping her clients navigate through a high-conflict divorce or custody battle. She makes herself available, is constantly strategizing, and is highly knowledgable about the law. She keeps a focus on the well-being of the children and provides wisdom and support both in the courtroom and in life. When my own case reached a resolution, I genuinely missed talking to her on a regular basis!

Lydia is one of the kindest, most compassionate people I have ever met. She represented me in a very contentious situation (that I went into without any hope), and gave 150% of herself to ensure that the most important people in the situation, my children, were taken care of. I cannot recommend her highly enough, especially in matters where children are involved.

Lydia is the most unethical ugly person I have ever met. She thrives on unstable people and is dishonest and fake. Her personal life, finances, and reputation is a mess in a small community. She is the quintessential defination of a ugly bottom feeder. Please do not consider her services....

Ethan helped us with a real-estate titling transaction. His knowledge of real-estate law in CA and tax consequences of different approaches, quick responses to our contacts, and overall professionalism were prominent in the transaction and very much appreciated. He saved us time and money on something we had to get done fairly quickly.

We consulted with Ethan over the phone about a real property matter that included questions about property lines. He was very professional in arranging the interview and addressing the questions we raised. He made helpful recommendations after the consultation .

Ethan Birnberg helped me with two real estate transactions in the past 5 years in the Tahoe area. The first the seller kept throwing more demands at us with unrealistic timetables- but Ethan was a true professional. Super prompt, responsive and knowledgeable. Now I have a great property that my family loves. More recently, I was interested in a real estate transaction, which the seller had some pretty unreasonable terms. Ethan, while reminding me that i was in the decision maker, helped me understand the details of the deal that made it a potentially hazardous one. Thankfully, I avoided something that could have been a real mistake. I am so thankful for Ethan's knowledge, promptness, and ability to manage the legal side, but also look out for you as a client. I have tremendous respect for Ethan Birnberg as an attorney and as a person and very very highly recommend him.

What took Mario 20 mins would have taken me 2 hrs+ on Turbo Tax to do. Mario is friendly, professional, and most importantly, knowledgeable. By the end he practically forced me to take home more money than I was expecting, lol! I will definitely be back next year for his service. I highly recommend him.

It was a long road and a very complicated case. Jude stayed with it, through the frustration and my stubbornness. It all worked out in the end. We appreciate his hard work and commitment.

I don’t know where to begin! Jude is an absolutely amazing lawyer! I wouldn’t recommend anyone else in the area! He is very efficient, reliable, and not afraid to tell you what’s up! I would have thrown out 9 years of my life but he was an absolute legend and I only did 6 months, which I deserved. None the less, almost 10 years later still helped out very much with getting those charges expunged and turning the page to an old chapter of my life. Absolute legend! Thank you!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Truckee, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
