I recently engaged the services of Mr. MARCUS for my child’s case and, unfortunately, my experience did not meet the expectations set by other reviews. While I appreciate Mr. MARCUS's expertise in the field, I felt that the representation provided was not aligned with my child’s best interests, which was concerning and disappointing. It seemed there was a bias that did not favor a fair outlook for my child's situation. I would encourage Mr. MARCUS to ensure that the representation of all parties' interests, especially those of minors, is balanced and fair in future cases. This feedback is intended to be constructive and I hope it will be taken into consideration.

I was in need of an attorney for a divorce case and custody of a pet in LA County. After many many calls, I finally found Marcus & Associates. Steven Marcus is, hands down, the most intelligent attorney I have ever spoken to. After speaking to him, I literally felt a weight come off of my shoulders. I have the utmost of confidence in him. He is meticulous and will represent you aggressively. There are never any guarantee's in any court case, but having Marcus & Associates in your corner, you will know you have someone looking out for your best interests.

Jim did a fantastic job during my lengthy divorce proceeding. He was very knowledgeable and prepared, and skillfully guided me through all the sometimes ugly and painful steps. I'm grateful to have had such a strong attorney that could so brilliantly stand up to the Beverly Hills attorney that my ex hired. Knowing my financial struggles, Jim generously allowed me to make payments on my bill. And to top it off, his office staff is amazing ! I'm a very satisfied client.

Mr. Neavitt was an excellent choice for my custody case matter. I had previously worked with Jarvis, Kreager and Sullivan, a supposedly "big name" in the local Family Law scene, but everything about Mr. Neavitt and his staff was an improvement over that much larger firm. Mr. Neavitt's staff prepared my court filings and did an excellent job from the beginning, and they took the time to get to know my case so that they could effectively communicate my arguments. This was a big deal for me, because the staff at Jarvis did a terrible job, and my wife and I were eventually forced to prepare all of the documents ourselves. On the day of the actual court appearance, Mr. Neavitt was clearly in charge. He seemed to give off an air of competency and control that was felt by everyone, including and especially opposing counsel. I would recommend his office highly to anyone looking to settle a Family Law case.

Mr. Neavitt was my attorney on a complex domestic violence and child custody dispute, and support matter. My complex custody issues included substance abuse, domestic violence and mental illness, all of which Mr. Neavitt skillfully reported to the court over vigorous opposition. I was granted domestic violence temporary restraining orders. The support issues were complex because my husband (self-employed) has refused to produce discovery and any financial information. Mr. Neavitt was able to focus the court's attention directly on these matters, despite the smoke & mirrors & misdirection of my husband and his legal counsel. The result of the hearing was 100% in my favor. Mr. Neavitt's skill, knowledge and Family Law expertise have been well worth the money that I have paid him thus far, and the $25K attorney fee award which he was able to obtain for me yesterday will go a long way toward continuing my legal representation and obtaining a fair distribution of our assets. I am a single mom, on a limited income, and Mr. Neavitt really fought for me. P.S. Mr. Neavitt's staff is fabulous to work with, especially Julie, Claudia and Sue!!

GREAT LAWYER. Manages his clients well and keeps them well-informed of everything going on. He made sure I knew exactly what the worst-case and best-case scenarios were for my case, how much each would cost, and what the likelihood of all the possibilities were. This is INCREDIBLY USEFUL information when facing expensive legal decisions. No matter how complicated the matter is, speak with Lloyd Lee; I had a great experience with him and think that others will as well. It is always nice to find someone who you can trust to fight for you and your needs - he focuses on doing quality work for all of his clients (he did for me!). Trust is the name of the game when finding the right lawyer. I trust Lloyd Lee.

Jane and her team did a wonderful job with our family trust. We had several properties and a blended family where we would eventually have to disperse our assets. They made the process easy and efficient. The final trust package was thorough and made us feel we covered all the bases.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Valencia, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
