2
The lawyer has a track record of successful outcomes, including exonerating clients, winning lawsuits, and achieving favorable settlements
“Mr. Pell saved my life on a criminal defense case. I was looking at 18 years in state prison. I had used 2 previous attorneys and with no positive results, I hired Mr. Pell. Soon after, I was exonerated of all charges.”
3
The lawyer and his staff are responsive, supportive, and provide excellent client service
“Steve is a great attorney! He tries his cases in the courtroom, not in the media. He is extremely knowledgeable and supportive. His staff is top notch as well.”
Cons
1
Some reviews indicate the lawyer's office and staff were unprofessional, disorganized, and unresponsive to client needs
“His office was dirty. Kids running around the office. He was always to busy to talk. Never got a invoice on a monthly cycle . He takes your money and no work is done.”
2
There are concerns about the lawyer's billing practices, with reports of excessive fees and delays in resolving cases
“He kept collecting money and in turn would push back the court dates. He kept telling me that this is how we win. The office itself was very unprofessional and always acted as if they were doing me a favor and that I was a disruption to them. He pushed my case off more than 4 years and cost me almost $20,000 to fight a DUI case that he did not win or even try to win.”

I hired Mr. Pell many years ago to fight a DUI case. We met a couple times over YEARS. He kept collecting money and in turn would push back the court dates. He kept telling me that this is how we win. The office itself was very unprofessional and always acted as if they were doing me a favor and that I was a disruption to them. He pushed my case off more than 4 years and cost me almost $20,000 to fight a DUI case that he did not win or even try to win. Run run run away from this law office and the "lawyers" who work there. Since then (more than 8 years ago) I now have experience with many other law firms, primarily for business and trust purposes. I have never met another attorney that was this terrible.

I am Jerry. I am a client of Mr. Pell. I retained Mr. Pell in June of 2014 for the purpose of handling a DUI and DMV hearing. I only had two Beers. The outcome was we had a DMV hearing, Mr. Pell hired the best expert for me, and we won the hearing saving my license and we won the criminal case saving me from a DUI conviction and from insurance increases and all the penalties. I came in and Mr Pell and I sat down face to face. He said I can help you and he did. We have had contact around 30 times, every time Mr. Pell has been available to me and has taken my life and matter very seriously. I have friends that I recommended and he handled their matters with the same professionalism. He took care of a woman's DMV hearing, attended with her, was victorious and she was extremely happy. She was very fragile and Mr. Pell helped her tremendously. A Pastor asked me to help her. She did not know where to turn and helped her throughout the matter and resovled her problems. I felt confident that the advise he gave me was competent and completely correct. Mr. Pell followed through with everything he said he was going to do. He did everything timely and well. I observed others in his office and everyone who I run into feels he did excellent work for them. When I shopped around looking for counsel. I talked to a different attorney and felt he was not genuine and another one was a better than thou. One could not get off the dime. When I saw Mr. Pell he did not hide anything and was right out front. He knows the system and took great care of me. Except for what is on the internet which I think to be false there is nothing negative about Mr. Pell. Sunday I went to a memorial. Police were there. A councilman was there. My problem was mentioned and I said: If there is a problem I told him to go see Attorney Steve Pell. Mr. Pell allowed me to make payments and I was very happy with him and the outcome. Regarding the posting of STEER WELL CLEAR OF THIS GUY THE PERSON FROM 2007 and any negatives, Mr. Pell was voted the Best Divorce Lawyer by the Star Readers in 1996. His office has 10 years of being the Best Law Firm DIRECTLY POSTED. I would believe Star Readers vs a nasty posting. Reputations take forever to build and seconds to destroy. Mr. Pell may be intimidating to the other side but not to his clients. I know both of Mr. Pell's staff, Mrs Pell is a certified civil litigation and family law specialist. Those certificates are on her wall. Every time I rang the Bell Mrs Pell was right there Every document I got from her was very much appreciated. Mr. Pell has called me back every time I have called and has called me on his own. He kept me totally up to date on every aspect of my case. I am told that child/support is only as reliable as the proof of the numbers supplied. The Disso master spits out the numbers. I am told that Mr. Pell is the best Divorce Attorney. REGARDING PHONE BOOK CREDENTIALS BEWARE: This sounds very crazy. Some people are liars. People can say anything. Note houses usually will be divided 50 50 depending on who put down what. Retirements are governed by law, so no one would lose 90% unless they cheated somewhere else and got stuck having to give away more of their retirement. If someone lost their house, that would based on whatever happened in their case. They may not have paid their mortgage. Mr. Pell is known at being excellent in child custody. Mr. Pell would not give in an inch of my rights. I am sure he would not let someone who was entitled to more lose their house, give away 90% of their IRA which is governed by law that directs how IRA's are divided. I think he is an awesome lawyer.

I made the mistake of retaining Steve Pell back in 2007 when a friend advised me to "lawyer up" for my divorce. Not knowing how to find a good attorney (besides word of mouth), I picked the lawyer with the biggest ad in the Yellow Pages. Biggest mistake of my life. It started with his staff who were completely incompetent. The few times I called with a question, they treated me like I was calling for the very first time (i.e. "How do you spell your last name?" or "What is your phone number?"). Pell would never call me back when I would leave a message with his staff. I engaged in a total of one sit-down with him where I found him to be intimidating and condescending in his approach. Being the first time I'd ever hired an attorney, I figured those characteristics would serve me well in the court room when dealing with the ex-wife's attorney. Wrong. His initial speculation for my bottom line, a month, in Child/Spousal Support came in $1000 higher than expected. I switched attorneys after a very short time with him, but never saw a dime of the remainder of my retainer. Unfortunately, I'm STILL dealing with the fall-out from hiring this guy to this very day. The ex-wife's current attorney recently discovered that the state of CA had no jurisdiction over the Child Custody/Visitation portion of my divorce due to the fact my kids had resided out of state for at least 60 days prior to my filing. I personally feel Pell knew this fact, but decided I was one more "rube" with a retainer fee in hand. And if he didn't know...well, just another testament to his lack of knowledge on CA law. I only wish they had this website back in 2007. It would've saved me the displeasure of ever meeting Pell, while saving me thousands of $$$ in the end.

5 stars is not enough. Mr. Mehas and Ms. Santo are the A team of attorneys. They are comprehensive, strategic, one step ahead, and a powerful team! When you hire the Santo Mehas firm to manage your case, you have hired a team of legal advocates who care, who will keep you informed, who will fight for you, and be the voice you need to represent you. Without the help of the entire firm, I know that I would not have had the successful outcomes I have had. They took on an extremely difficult case and encountered issues that no one expected and few had ever seen. They worked tirelessly to make sure that the truth was told and presented it perfectly. They stood by every one of my requests and guided me through the entire lengthy process. Though there were challenges, they strategically and diligently with compassion met them head on and never faltered. Their expertise and thoroughness provided us the pathway we needed to rise to victory. I am proud to be a client and will continue to retain them for all legal matters that may arise as I know I am in the best hands.

From my first meeting with Mr. Sandbach he made feel comfortable and was honest. I was so impressed with his skill and presence in the courtroom. The way he presented my case to the jury was amazing. I was confident that no matter what the outcome he had given it his all. Though it was a very stressful situation he made it so much easier for me as I went thru it knowing I could put my trust in him. We ended up winning the case! At the end of trial even some of the jurors were asking his name in case they ever needed a lawyer and told him how great he is! Robert Sandbach is a great person as well as a great attorney!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ventura, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
