I know this will be a little long, but this is important…. We used Ms. Bachtell for my husband divorce we had trust in her. That is now totally gone. Long story short…4.5 years ago we were in a pretty bad accident. Fortunately, everyone was not injured seriously. With that said…. Ms. Bachtell IS NOT AN INJURY LAWYER note to self. We called to get advice only. She said she could handle it….well she did kinda NOT. There are things we did not know. Subrogation, the fact that we were not hurt bad was only a “soft tissue” injury. Blah blah blah….turns out if we had been told these two things it probably wouldn’t have taken 4.5 years and a mediator to settle it. OH and after that it literally took 6 months for her to finally settle it. The worse part she would have one excuse after another why she wasn’t on our case, out of state, at Lowes for a pipe that broke etc. etc. I am so angry it’s not funny. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE HER BUSINESS. Lawyers work on referrals. She is not a professional lawyer

Ms. Bachtell will take your money and provide a lot of excuses for why she hasn't done anything, but that's all she'll do. Something simple like returning calls or responding to emails/texts is asking way too much from Ms. Bachtell. It's been over 2 1/2 years since I started the divorce process - it's just been a huge waste of time and money.

I don't even know where to begin... she ended up messing up so horribly.. I am now a single mom in $25K worth of debt because I had to hire a new attorney to fix things and keep me out of jail. she lied, ignored emails and phone calls and talked with opposing counsel about my case after I fired her! RUN!!

Worst lawyer I've ever dealt with. Messed up the divorce paperworks so bad I ended up doing it myself. Judgement was rejected by the courts due to procedural errors. Took her a month to finally look at it again...no responses to numerous emails and phone calls. Promised phone appointments by her office staff that were not kept. When she finally gets it done....it's rejected by the courts AGAIN. All due to legal/procedural errors that a Family Law attorney should know about.

Over the past three years, I have seen, heard, and learned a lot in the Contra Costa Family Courthouse. One of the highest recommendations an attorney can receive is when the Court staff speaks highly of her or him. It is analogous to a hospital environment when the nurses give the thumbs up about a doctor. Yolanda Bachtell has the respect and proverbial ‘thumbs up’ in the Family Law Courthouse. I hired Attorney Bachtell three years ago after interviewing several other attorneys, some of whom were on the Super Lawyer* list. What impressed me about Ms. Bachtell were her calm unequivocal demeanor and perceptive questions and responses about my divorce case and financial situation. I believe the main objective of family law is receiving an even-handed outcome; and the way to achieve this is to have an attorney who thoroughly knows the law, skillfully uses that knowledge during the entire legal process, has integrity and is professional and honest. Ms. Bachtell has unsurmountable integrity, she is honest and SMART. I have watched her diligently craft motions, declarations, responses, financial spreadsheets, prepare trial binders and propetizers with multiple exhibits for my case. She interacts with Judges confidently and with composure. She is so organized that Judge Joyce Cram would often refer to her for the documents needed by both sides while in our hearing. I agree with another reviewer that it is important for a petitioner to feel involved with his or her case. Ms. Bachtell respects the investment I have in my case and empowers me to be as involved as is appropriate. As with any attorney, there is typically a 1-day delay in responding to clients. There have been times when I left a frantic voice mail for Ms. Bachtell, and she responded immediately or let me know when she would be able to discuss the matter. My experience with Attorney Bachtell as my family law attorney has been as positive as possible considering I am getting a divorce. The confidence I feel having her in my corner, advocating for me, has kept me sane through this long arduous process. ____________________________________________________________________ *NOTE: To be listed as a “Super Lawyer” only requires votes by their peers. Usually, these attorneys are members of numerous associations within the county. After some research, I have learned that the Super Lawyer list is based on popularity--not credibility.

John is by far one of the most trusted attorneys I've worked with both professionally and personally. He walked us through each phase of our Will and Estate Planning and personally delivered our final documents to go over each and every step so my wife and I understood.

I just had a single interaction with this firm with an inquiry. They reponded pretty quickly. Although they could not take my case but answered to my email with proper advice and reference. My review is based on that single interaction but I felt really good about it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Star Law Firm Marshall law firm is the best. I want to thank him again. I don't think his clients are just another case to him. When I read his demand letter I had to thank him for listening to me. He not only represented me throughout the matter. He was available to answer questions I had along the way. I'm grateful that Chuck Marshall is on my side. My matter was settled before the real damage was done. I purchased a BMW Thinking they would use my capital one. “ Never do what I did, That is leaving with the car without ever seeing the contract”. Until Chuck Marshall represented me the dealership treated me and this matter like a joke. THANK YOU CHUCK MARSHALL

Six months ago, one of my children was arrested, and the charges were very serious. We immediately contacted Mr. Burak, who was incredibly supportive, and caring. During this difficult time, Mr. Burak always made sure that we were understanding what was going on with our child, as we had never been through anything like this before. He never ignored our questions, (we had many) and he was always open to listening to anything we had to say regarding our child's case. Mr. Burak's knowledge of the law is very reassuring to a parent (or anyone) who is seeking his help. On the several occasions that we had to attend Court, we noticed that Mr. Burak is very well respected, amongst his peers and other officers of the Court. We were so grateful that he was by our Child's side, and very much appreciate everything he has done, not only for our Child, but for us as well. Had we not hired Mr. Burak, our Child's future would have been destroyed. I can only imagine how things might have been, however, our child has a second chance, and that is because of Mr. Burak. We will never be able to thank him enough. He saved our Child's life.

I hired Blackie to represent me for my second DUI offense. I immediately felt calm after speaking with him on the phone. He only said what was necessary and was very clear. He took care of everything. In court it was obvious that Blackie is well known and respected. If you're looking for a professional that is well known in the field and will get things done, he's your guy. Just do what he says and you'll be fine! Take a deep breath and know it will all be taken care of! Call Blackie, you won't regret it!!

Blackie defended me in a DUI case, which ended in a mistrial. We went back to trial a year later and Blackie convinced the DA and judge to dismiss the charges, and I was exonerated. Blackie is a hardworking and honest lawyer, and his wife Jane is understanding, caring and a pleasure to work with. I did quite a bit of research before retaining Blackie and also recently sat on a jury for another DUI trial. Put simply, I don't believe there is a better DUI legal team out there. All the other lawyers I talked to recommended I plead guilty. I'm glad I didn't listen to them and retained Blackie instead.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Walnut Creek, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
