Pros
1
Provides excellent and efficient legal services, particularly in family law and divorce cases
“Attorney James Fishel and Paralegal/Notary Sunny DeBord make one excellent team. Prior to hiring this fine team, I was paying a nightmarish amount to an Ex who didn't deserve a dime. James and Sunny quickly got this under control and, before too long, were able to have any payment cease altogether.”
2
Demonstrates a compassionate and client-focused approach, prioritizing the best interests of the children
“Jim's philosophy was to put the best interest of the children as the highest priority & that was my mission also in my divorce. It was not a contentious divorce & he helped maintain that theme.”
3
Offers clear and transparent communication, providing realistic expectations and a clear roadmap of the necessary steps
“One of Mr. Fishel's standout qualities is his unwavering honesty. He provided realistic expectations and a clear roadmap of the necessary steps, ensuring I was well-informed at every stage.”
4
Responsive and available to clients, even on short notice
“Mr. Fishel was always available to me, (even on very short notice) with great advice and service, in a very sensitive family matter.”
5
Highly knowledgeable and skilled in family law, with the ability to navigate complex cases effectively
“I was extremely impressed by his ability to review a very long and complicated custody/DV case with an eagle eye for detail. He also had the ability to get the 'big picture', which included the safety of me and my children.”
Cons
1
Occasional failure to appear in court as scheduled
“His absolute act of 'lawyerism' was to not show up to my court date!! You figure that if I can drive 500 miles with my 1yo son in tow that Mr. Fishel could have at least shown up to the appt. He instead played like he had no idea that he should have been in court, even after he was the one that got the date in the first place!!!”
2
Potential for overbilling or padding of time spent on services
“Beyond the typical over billing for services never rendered or padding time (even for times that I was right in the office and could never have spent the time he accounted).”

Attorney James Fishel has represented me for multiple legal matters spanning from 2013 to 2023, and I am compelled to share my positive experience. His expertise and dedication were evident throughout the process, ultimately leading to a resolution that prioritized the safety and well-being of my child. One of Mr. Fishel's standout qualities is his unwavering honesty. He provided realistic expectations and a clear roadmap of the necessary steps, ensuring I was well-informed at every stage. This transparency instilled confidence and trust in his representation. Equally commendable is the kindness and professionalism displayed by Mr. Fishel's paralegal, Sunny. Together, they created a supportive and empathetic environment, making a challenging legal journey more manageable. In summary, James Fishel's legal expertise, honesty, and the compassionate approach of his team have made a significant impact on my family law cases. I used James because he was in my network for a home repair dispute. He was very friendly and his demand letter got me exactly what I needed! Thank you Mr. Fishel!

I'd put off starting my case partly out of confusion about what to do, in what order. My Fishel reviewed my docs and walked me through the changes and the next action steps. His guidance will make a postive difference in how the case goes. Mr. Fishel has been clear, concise and compassionate. I greatly appreciate both him and Sunny Debord in his office. I will be working with them on the next steps.

I am beyond grateful for finding Attorney James Fishel and Paralegal Sunny DeBord. When I retained him, he had less than a month to get up to speed. I was extremely impressed by his ability to review a very long and complicated custody/DV case with an eagle eye for detail. He also had the ability to get the "big picture", which included the safety of me and my children. He was able to hold a solid understanding of the past, present and our future need with ease. His methodology and organization was stellar (this is a nod to Sonny as well). His strategy was solid. His demeanor in court was respectful, kind, diplomatic AND razor sharp. I'd rehire him again in a heartbeat.

I got a speeding ticket which resulted in a hefty fine that I thought was exorbitant for going a little over the speed limit in a commercial area. I consulted with James Fishel to see if I have any available options, and I am so glad that I did. After talking to me in detail, he contested my ticket with a detailed written response. All i had to do was submit the response to the court. My ticket was waived and I was found not guilty. I will highly recommend James Fishel for his knowledge and his professionalism.

John is by far one of the most trusted attorneys I've worked with both professionally and personally. He walked us through each phase of our Will and Estate Planning and personally delivered our final documents to go over each and every step so my wife and I understood.

I just had a single interaction with this firm with an inquiry. They reponded pretty quickly. Although they could not take my case but answered to my email with proper advice and reference. My review is based on that single interaction but I felt really good about it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Star Law Firm Marshall law firm is the best. I want to thank him again. I don't think his clients are just another case to him. When I read his demand letter I had to thank him for listening to me. He not only represented me throughout the matter. He was available to answer questions I had along the way. I'm grateful that Chuck Marshall is on my side. My matter was settled before the real damage was done. I purchased a BMW Thinking they would use my capital one. “ Never do what I did, That is leaving with the car without ever seeing the contract”. Until Chuck Marshall represented me the dealership treated me and this matter like a joke. THANK YOU CHUCK MARSHALL

Six months ago, one of my children was arrested, and the charges were very serious. We immediately contacted Mr. Burak, who was incredibly supportive, and caring. During this difficult time, Mr. Burak always made sure that we were understanding what was going on with our child, as we had never been through anything like this before. He never ignored our questions, (we had many) and he was always open to listening to anything we had to say regarding our child's case. Mr. Burak's knowledge of the law is very reassuring to a parent (or anyone) who is seeking his help. On the several occasions that we had to attend Court, we noticed that Mr. Burak is very well respected, amongst his peers and other officers of the Court. We were so grateful that he was by our Child's side, and very much appreciate everything he has done, not only for our Child, but for us as well. Had we not hired Mr. Burak, our Child's future would have been destroyed. I can only imagine how things might have been, however, our child has a second chance, and that is because of Mr. Burak. We will never be able to thank him enough. He saved our Child's life.

I hired Blackie to represent me for my second DUI offense. I immediately felt calm after speaking with him on the phone. He only said what was necessary and was very clear. He took care of everything. In court it was obvious that Blackie is well known and respected. If you're looking for a professional that is well known in the field and will get things done, he's your guy. Just do what he says and you'll be fine! Take a deep breath and know it will all be taken care of! Call Blackie, you won't regret it!!

Blackie defended me in a DUI case, which ended in a mistrial. We went back to trial a year later and Blackie convinced the DA and judge to dismiss the charges, and I was exonerated. Blackie is a hardworking and honest lawyer, and his wife Jane is understanding, caring and a pleasure to work with. I did quite a bit of research before retaining Blackie and also recently sat on a jury for another DUI trial. Put simply, I don't believe there is a better DUI legal team out there. All the other lawyers I talked to recommended I plead guilty. I'm glad I didn't listen to them and retained Blackie instead.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Walnut Creek, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
