For the past three years, I've had the privilege of having Richard navigate me through the stormiest of legal seas. My situation is one that reads like a legal thriller - rife with cross-TRO's (temporary restraining orders), a ferocious custody battle, and the Sisyphean task of dealing with a co-parent steadfastly evading child support responsibilities. Throughout this tumultuous journey, Richard has been my cornerstone. His adept legal counsel proved invaluable during each phase of my case, and when he switched firms, I didn't hesitate to follow. That's the level of trust and respect he has earned. Each encounter with Richard reiterates his mastery of family law. His ability to dissect and lay bare the often perplexing legal proceedings has given me a level of comprehension I never thought possible. He demystifies, advises, and advocates with an eloquence and effectiveness that is truly rare. What stands out the most, however, is his unyielding ethical stance. Regardless of which firm he was with, his moral compass didn't waiver. In an arena where the low road is often taken, Richard consistently champions the high road. He approaches each challenge with integrity, ensuring that no advantage is sought unless it is fair and just. Navigating fiercely contested custody is nothing short of warfare, and throughout this, Richard has been a tactician, ensuring that my voice is heard amidst the clamor and my rights remain front and center. His guidance in composing and submitting crucial forms and motions has been flawless, including the crucial effort to submit a CCP 1008 motion under a pressing deadline. To those embroiled in complicated family law matters: believe me when I say that Richard is the ally you need by your side. His dedication is unparalleled, and his talent for turning legal complexities into coherent strategies is unmatched. Richard doesn't just provide legal support; he offers peace of mind, which, in the throes of legal turmoil, is priceless. Thank you, Richard, for your exceptional service.

Mr. Meisenhelder has been representing me for years. I'm running a multiple business that requires the legal counsel from time to time. Including reviewing our contracts, insurance policies and other business needs. We have them on a retainer and call or email away. Mr. Meisenhelder and his team is always able to understand my unique requirement for a contracts that I need to create. They are able to reduce my risk and liability by identifying unforeseen events that could occur in the future. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.

Six months ago, one of my children was arrested, and the charges were very serious. We immediately contacted Mr. Burak, who was incredibly supportive, and caring. During this difficult time, Mr. Burak always made sure that we were understanding what was going on with our child, as we had never been through anything like this before. He never ignored our questions, (we had many) and he was always open to listening to anything we had to say regarding our child's case. Mr. Burak's knowledge of the law is very reassuring to a parent (or anyone) who is seeking his help. On the several occasions that we had to attend Court, we noticed that Mr. Burak is very well respected, amongst his peers and other officers of the Court. We were so grateful that he was by our Child's side, and very much appreciate everything he has done, not only for our Child, but for us as well. Had we not hired Mr. Burak, our Child's future would have been destroyed. I can only imagine how things might have been, however, our child has a second chance, and that is because of Mr. Burak. We will never be able to thank him enough. He saved our Child's life.

I hired Blackie to represent me for my second DUI offense. I immediately felt calm after speaking with him on the phone. He only said what was necessary and was very clear. He took care of everything. In court it was obvious that Blackie is well known and respected. If you're looking for a professional that is well known in the field and will get things done, he's your guy. Just do what he says and you'll be fine! Take a deep breath and know it will all be taken care of! Call Blackie, you won't regret it!!

Blackie defended me in a DUI case, which ended in a mistrial. We went back to trial a year later and Blackie convinced the DA and judge to dismiss the charges, and I was exonerated. Blackie is a hardworking and honest lawyer, and his wife Jane is understanding, caring and a pleasure to work with. I did quite a bit of research before retaining Blackie and also recently sat on a jury for another DUI trial. Put simply, I don't believe there is a better DUI legal team out there. All the other lawyers I talked to recommended I plead guilty. I'm glad I didn't listen to them and retained Blackie instead.

John is by far one of the most trusted attorneys I've worked with both professionally and personally. He walked us through each phase of our Will and Estate Planning and personally delivered our final documents to go over each and every step so my wife and I understood.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Walnut Creek, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
