Proud to say that I just became a US citizen last month thanks to Erika and her team!! 👏🏼👏🏼🥳 My experience having Erika Portillo and her team as my immigration attorney for the past 10 years has been phenomenal! From the very start of my case she has ALWAYS been upfront and honest with me about my case which made the whole process much less stressful for me. Erika will ALWAYS go above and beyond her expertise to help her clients as best as she can! I was able to petition my mother and she also just became a US Citizen two weeks ago! The only reason why I took the 10 years to apply for our citizenship was because I personally decided to wait until my Green card almost expired to apply for our Citizenship. I know I should have applied sooner but with three young children, my studies, and work, I got so busy in my “mom life” that I didn’t realize how fast time had gone by. The good thing is that as soon as Erika filed both my mother’s and my N-400 application in December, by February we had already received our appointment letter in the mail for our citizenship exam! After passing the exam, we received our Oath ceremony appointment for citizenship in the SF location just three months after! We are so happy and relieved that we no longer have to worry about our immigration status and most importantly that the process was smooth because we didn’t have to stress about receiving bad service or looking around for new attorneys because Erika took good care of us every step of the way. 🙏🏼 I mean this from the bottom of my heart because I’ve heard so many unfortunate situations of how difficult it is for our people to find a good lawyer who doesn’t charge them every time they show up to their office, or charge them tons of dollars upfront to take the case and then they take forever to respond or get a hold of. This is not the case with Erika Portillo! With that said, I will say that it’s 100% worth your time and money to schedule a consultation with Erika to see if you have a good case. She will not lie to you nor waste your time and money like some attorney tend to. I actually just referred her services to a friend of mine who was asking for an immigration attorney for her brother in law. So I’m confident that if her family takes my referral, they will be in good hands. *FYI: Both Erika and her front desk receptionists are all Spanish and English speaking so communicating with them and getting answers about your case is very easy as well. They were always ready to assist us with a nice smile on their faces. What I love the most about having Erika as an immigration attorney is that she continues to educate herself. She stays on top of all the new laws and that’s what allows her to provide such clear and accurate services. I couldn’t imagine her being able to branch off and now having her own team if she wasn’t this great! That speaks volumes! A big congratulations to her again for that because she’s a very hard working woman who deserves such success, respect, and your trust!

I had a case where I was electrocuted and for 10months VZ worked on my case of course looking to take care of me appropriately based on the nature of the case. Once they found out I was on probation for a crime I had not committed but got railroaded, they first said we can’t represent you because of the nature of your case. I was like, WHAT? We have a working case and now 10months later the partners decide they don’t want to represent me anymore because of my probation???? What the heck does that even have to do with me getting what’s owed to me because I was electrocuted? They gave me some pocket change and took there money like I was an old appliance. Now I could have said no I’ll try and find another law firm but law firms don’t like to take cases that other law firms backed up on. I don’t recommend this law firm to anyone. Especially if you have a record. 0 stars

John is by far one of the most trusted attorneys I've worked with both professionally and personally. He walked us through each phase of our Will and Estate Planning and personally delivered our final documents to go over each and every step so my wife and I understood.

I just had a single interaction with this firm with an inquiry. They reponded pretty quickly. Although they could not take my case but answered to my email with proper advice and reference. My review is based on that single interaction but I felt really good about it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Star Law Firm Marshall law firm is the best. I want to thank him again. I don't think his clients are just another case to him. When I read his demand letter I had to thank him for listening to me. He not only represented me throughout the matter. He was available to answer questions I had along the way. I'm grateful that Chuck Marshall is on my side. My matter was settled before the real damage was done. I purchased a BMW Thinking they would use my capital one. “ Never do what I did, That is leaving with the car without ever seeing the contract”. Until Chuck Marshall represented me the dealership treated me and this matter like a joke. THANK YOU CHUCK MARSHALL

Six months ago, one of my children was arrested, and the charges were very serious. We immediately contacted Mr. Burak, who was incredibly supportive, and caring. During this difficult time, Mr. Burak always made sure that we were understanding what was going on with our child, as we had never been through anything like this before. He never ignored our questions, (we had many) and he was always open to listening to anything we had to say regarding our child's case. Mr. Burak's knowledge of the law is very reassuring to a parent (or anyone) who is seeking his help. On the several occasions that we had to attend Court, we noticed that Mr. Burak is very well respected, amongst his peers and other officers of the Court. We were so grateful that he was by our Child's side, and very much appreciate everything he has done, not only for our Child, but for us as well. Had we not hired Mr. Burak, our Child's future would have been destroyed. I can only imagine how things might have been, however, our child has a second chance, and that is because of Mr. Burak. We will never be able to thank him enough. He saved our Child's life.

I hired Blackie to represent me for my second DUI offense. I immediately felt calm after speaking with him on the phone. He only said what was necessary and was very clear. He took care of everything. In court it was obvious that Blackie is well known and respected. If you're looking for a professional that is well known in the field and will get things done, he's your guy. Just do what he says and you'll be fine! Take a deep breath and know it will all be taken care of! Call Blackie, you won't regret it!!

Blackie defended me in a DUI case, which ended in a mistrial. We went back to trial a year later and Blackie convinced the DA and judge to dismiss the charges, and I was exonerated. Blackie is a hardworking and honest lawyer, and his wife Jane is understanding, caring and a pleasure to work with. I did quite a bit of research before retaining Blackie and also recently sat on a jury for another DUI trial. Put simply, I don't believe there is a better DUI legal team out there. All the other lawyers I talked to recommended I plead guilty. I'm glad I didn't listen to them and retained Blackie instead.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Walnut Creek, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
