Worse attorney ever. How can a labor attorney defend a criminal case ? Makes no attempt to help you nor bothers to keep you informed of your case. Sits in court agreeing with the DA and not defending you. You are not treated as a person but a case to get over with and filed away. Get anyone else but Carlos

I will never have this public pretender as my legal advocate ever again, and I’d suggest you do the same. Worst public pretender to ever exist

I've know Mr. Wyatt for close to 10 years and has always produced excellent work. I've happily referred my friends and family to him several times. His staff is always so helpful and has even let me use their printer/copier in a pinch before. They really stepped up and saved my day.

I found myself in dire need of representation in Family Court when the mother of my child falsely accused me of domestic violence after I filed for sole custody of our daughter. Ami Scarfe represented me for several months, never wavering in her commitment and, in fact, becoming increasingly invested in protecting an innocent child in need of a stable parent. She was tenacious in defending me against the numerous false allegations and lies brought forward by the opposition during court proceedings and in official documents. Ami's extensive experience in this county, including her knowledge of the opposing counsel and understanding of what resonates with the Judge overseeing the case, was invaluable. Her diligence in preparing for court, including organizing documents and keeping my arguments focused on the facts that mattered, was outstanding. While Ami is known for her aggressive representation, she also demonstrated a less aggressive side when it was in my best interest, skillfully working with both the Judge and the opposition to pursue my goals and, more importantly, the best interests of my daughter. Ami's knowledge of Family Law is unparalleled, and her strategic approach consistently kept us ten steps ahead of the opposition, leading to favorable outcomes. Her dedication was extraordinary; she left no stone unturned in pursuing what was best for me and my daughter. Moreover, Ami's involvement and attentiveness to related Criminal, Restraining Order, Child Support, and Guardianship cases that stemmed from the Family Law litigation made a significant difference in all aspects of my legal battles. Thanks to Ami's exceptional representation, we were able to expose the false allegations, get the restraining order dismissed, defeat the criminal charges, and thwart the mother's grandparents' attempt at emergency guardianship. Ultimately, I was awarded sole physical and legal custody of my daughter. There is no doubt in my mind or heart that no other lawyer could have dedicated themselves to my case or represented me with the same level of commitment and expertise as Ami Scarfe. Her representation saved my life, saved my daughter's life, and for that, I am eternally grateful. I cannot thank Ami and her incredible staff, Mike and Anna, enough for their professionalism and representation. There is no one else I would ever consider for legal representation—if you want the best, Ami Scarfe is your only choice!

Probate is a lengthy process but Amy Byrne is very attentive and responds quickly. She responding quickly, even when flooding occurred in Oroville and she did not have access to her office she maintained close contact with us. She is very articulate and wrote detailed easy to understand responses to all or our questions. She was willing to answer questions beyond the scope of the probate. The probate process is very lengthy in California but she moves things along at a faster pace than many others would and reduces the frustration created by the long process. She is the salve on the wound of a parents death.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Yuba City, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
