Sunita not only gave us great counsel, but because of her involvement in so many legal organizations seemed to know many of the people involved on both sides of our case. Those connections were invaluable to our understanding of the situation.

I hired Sunita to create some contracts for a new business I started. During our initial and free consultation, she was immediately engaged and interested, as I explained what I was looking for and never made me feel rushed or as if her time was more important than mine. I was impressed with her knowledge of contract law and she worked quickly to get me the documents for review. She was readily available for any follow-ups I had and completed the contracts in less time that I had anticipated. Her rates are extremely fair and her knowledge and efforts are outstanding. I'd recommend Sunita for any contract work you may have.

Ron was a lifelong, personal friend of my husband who passed away in March of 2020. He became a very special friend of mine. I was at a loss at the mere shock of my husband’s unexpected and sudden death. Ron helped me wade through my husband’s Trust and all of the responsibilities that I found myself having to deal with. I don’t know what I would have done without his legal expertise. Ron helped to keep me focused as I found myself oftentimes walking in a fog so much of the time for months after my husband died. Ron is the best and one of the nicest and kindest men I have ever met. He will always have a special place in my heart.

Mr. Ronald Brotzman (Ron) has been our legal counsel for over two decades and has really been there for us. Ron has provided council on family trusts and estates numerous times -- both our parents and ours. Ron has created estate plans for us including family trusts, wills, power of attorney documents and helped transfer estate property. He has been very helpful clarifying, and sometimes debunking, the cloud of legal information you come across on the internet. Ron has setup multiple LLC’s for our businesses and provided general legal counsel on potential disputes. When warranted he recommends other specialist, i.e., patent attorneys, etc. Most importantly, Ron is our first step in anything legal.

I have known Ron Brotzman for over 20 years and during that time he has handled a number of different legal matters for me. He is very knowledgeable about many facets of the law, especially in dealing with wills, trusts, and family law. He worked with my mother and myself in rewriting our wills and living wills, durable and medical Powers of Attorney, and Revocable Trusts. He gave us a variety of options as to how these could be set up and gave us his advice on what would be the best way and told us why. When I had an issue with a beneficiary, he helped me to figure out the best way to handle it. He is very approachable and quickly responds to any questions that I have. I know that he is looking out for my best interests and I am thankful to have him on my side. I highly recommend Ron to anyone needing an attorney.

Liz Kearney helped me during one of the most stressful and emotional time of my life when enduring employment discrimination and hostile work environment issues within a government entity. She was always professional, dedicated, trustworthy, and represented my case with integrity and drive. I was very satisfied with the outcome of my case, mostly because to Liz, I was a person and not just a case number. She listened to me when I desired to bring forth evidence and information to support my claims and she fought for me in my own drive for acknowledgment and justice. I highly recommend attorney Liz Kearney. Her intelligence, perseverance, knowledge of the laws, and refusal to be intimidated by high power agencies and personnel was very much appreciated during such a traumatic time.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Berthoud, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
