I am an activist for the poorest, least represented people in society and I have known Nancy since she was a public defender. She is a brilliant tactical attorney at trial and she is very well received when it comes to negotiating positive outcomes with district Attorneys. Nancy has a compassion and empathy that really tunes her in to the clients personality and she very quickly grasps the critical dynamics of relationships and circumstances of a case and she sorts out the truth and presents it to the court in persuasive terms. not everyone is innocent, and Nancy is very compassionate and she negotiates outcomes that are fair and positive for the client and the court. Nancy keeps people out of jail and minimizes their time in the system and the system can be very unfair without Nancy to guide you through it. She has also gone to bat for people on probation to be allowed to use medical marijuana with a prescription, particularly people with HIV who only get relief from marijuana use and nothing else. It took a lot of guts for her to advocate for changes to probation in Boulder County to allow people with medical conditions to use medical marijuana, it was a very edgy subject at the time. Nancy has worked on important cases and important issues without regard for her personal compensation many many times. I recently learned when I sent her a new client that she is finally a partner in a firm and I want to say it is about time Nancy got PAID! I have extensive experience with very tough people in the justice system in Colorado, I know the group of top attorneys in Colorado very well, and Nancy is absolutely the best. If you are in trouble, she is your savior, I've seen her work her magic for everyone I have ever sent to her and there have been many. Thanks for everything you do Nancy. Peace

I have hired Nancy on two different occasions and couldn't be more happy with the job she did. Both times she was very helpful, reassuring , professional, and a fighter when it comes to making a deal with the DA. One of my cases was totally thrown out and the other was dramatically reduced. All in all I would hire Nancy next time and ever time very happy with her services.

I interviewed 4 attorneys to handle my case. The first 3 attorneys spent 15-20 minutes with me on the phone explaining what I was facing and how they would defend me; each then invited me to their office for a 30 minute meeting, presumably at which point they would ask for my signature for their representation. Nancy spent an hour with me on the phone without any charge or expectation that she would represent me. She explained every detail of what I was facing and what was the most likely successful outcome. She was far more detailed than the others. She allowed me to ask a lot of questions. And when we were done with the phone consultation, she said, "I know you're talking with other attorneys. If you want to proceed with me, let me know." Choosing Nancy was easy because she gave me her best without expecting anything in return. As Nancy represented me throughout the process, I got the same treatment. She communicates in a very timely manner. She understands how to navigate the system to her clients' benefit. Knowing that a court-ordered treatment program would be part of the judge's decision, she got me going in that early. She took a personal interest in my family situation. Everything played out as she said it would, and I received the best outcome that was possible given the situation. I am very thankful that I found Nancy to represent me in this unwanted situation. I would recommend her to anyone facing similar.

We hired Mark to review and start the litigation process in regard to a very complicated commercial real estate transaction. We have also had him review several contracts with construction professionals. Furthermore, we feel we have avoided some future disasters through his wise counsel and knowledge of what good contracts should look like. He works to empower his clients moving forward to avoid future problems. We just can't say enough on how grateful we are for his work on our behalf. Mark is very skilled, articulate, understands law, and abides by very high standards. He works hard and finishes what he starts in a very timely manner. We no longer feel confused and defeated because of his clarity and understanding of complex real estate issues. His wise counsel and clarity concerning real estate issues have also personally boosted our confidence in moving forward in a positive direction. We are immensely grateful for his hard work on our behalf. He makes matters so clear. We no longer feel we are in the middle of a confused whirlwind in regard to legal matters. We feel we have a genuine advocate who is very honest and tells it like it is. Rare these days!

Mark helped me navigate my options and legal rights with regard to a property boundary issue. He also drafted and filed a permissive easement on my behalf to allow my neighbor to continue landscaping an area of land that I found out was actually my property after having my property surveyed (thus preventing the neighbor from making any future claims of ownership).

Mark is smart and tough. He showed our neighbors they would never again prevent us from crossing their land to access our Colorado mountain property. When they ignored our easement rights, Mark pushed back hard. Mark reached a settlement agreement without any concessions. Hire Mark to WIN any contentious property dispute.

I was extremely pleased with Kara Edmunds as my lawyer. I was in a serious automobile accident in December 2010, and she represented my claims to the insurance company. Kara kept me in the loop each step of the way and always responded promptly to my questions and concerns. Kara cautioned me not to rush this case settlement. She took her time and my reward was more that I had hoped for. I would recommend Kara Edmunds to anyone without reservation.

I was in a car accident and the insurance company was firmly offering me way less than would even cover my bills. After being bullied by the insurance handler, I called Kara to see if she could help. She came through with such integrity and persistence.

Due to my chronic pain I was on medicine that effected my cognative and ability to perform my job. After 19 years at the same company I was ask to leave and don't come back until I was better. Needless to say I was beside myself. Kara was referred to us by another attorney and I was never so happy and hopeful when we finally spoke. I knew that I had the right person for the job. She was able to understand my problem and was able to get the job done. I highly recommend when Kara tells you what her plans are, you just go with her for the ride and help her when she may need some assistance. Because she does and will get the job done. We are so grateful how are lives had changed with all the hard work that was done in my case. Kara is the person to ask for her help, you will not be disappointed.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Boulder, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
