I am not going to talk negative. But the one thing I will recommend is keep looking for a lawyer. I obviously will not recommend.

I used Carolyn for legal standing in a grandparent visitation issue, and she was outstanding. It was very difficult as the other party was only represented at the beginning. Carolyn was persistent and I was able to obtain visitation with my grandchildren. She is a great advocate for her clients and I would highly recommend her to everyone.

I originally gave Carolyn a 1 star review based on numerous factors. One of the factors was regarding health insurance changes following divorce. She did find that my company was incorrect and was able to get money back to me, which I appreciated. I do not think she was the correct personality fit for me, but it has been 2 years and everything is water under the bridge at this point. The remainder of my review is unchanged, but I do want to clarify that she was not at fault in the insurance status change and do work to get this solved for me.

I hired her for my divorce to facilitate the process. It was not a terribly contentious divorce, but she acted like it was- as if my husband was hiding money or being devious. She was snarky in her responses to me via email and seemed irritated with me about how I wanted MY divorce to go. My divorce is final, but there is still one piece of the settlement pending. I found out my divorce decree was final after I emailed the courts and received the information that my divorce was finalized 3 days before. I did not receive my divorce decree. It was sent to Carolyn. I received it 1 month later, when i had to request it form her, which was too late to change my health insurance dependents. The IRS has very specific rules about this, which I would expect a divorce attorney to know. So, I will end up paying and additional $2500 this year due to not receiving timely information. She took zero responsibility for this other than letting me know I seemed upset. When I indicated that she should acknowledge her responsibility in costing me $2500, she terminated her contract with me. I find this very disappointing and not worth the money I paid.

After attending one of the Hammond Law Firm seminars on Estate Planning we decided to contract with to create our Living Trust. Jessica was the attorney that assisted us in creating the documents needed to create this Trust. Due to an impending six week visit to family and friends we were is somewhat of a shortened time schedule. Jessica took the time to talk us through the critical aspects of creating a living trust and was able to schedule the follow-up meetings so as to accommodate our schedule. We are very satisfied with the work she has done and look forward to a long association with her in the future.

My wife and I attended the introductory workshop conducted by Jessica and decided she and the Hammond Law Group were the ones we wanted to work with in creating our estate plan. She guided us through the process and actually made it painless, if not a little fun. She helped us get through the “Five Wishes” which can be a little emotional. We look forward to working with her in the future to help us keep our plan on track.

Jessica represented me in a dIvor cell after 22 years of marriage. She had to deal with every possible le aspect from properties, retirement, military, custody, maintenance, money, debts, probate, and even an accident settlement. She always had the answers and helped me stay calm in a very stressful situation. I was happy with the outcome of the proceedings. Nobody wins in divorce. She is an excellent attorney and I highly recommend her services.

I had a very intricate legal situation, and Clyde Zamir from Family Law Group provided outstanding support. His explanations were clear, he kept his promises, and went above and beyond by working after hours one several occasions! Clyde ensured I understood every detail, offering trustworthy guidance throughout the process by making calls, sending emails, and offering overall guidance/support. Kudos to April and Kenah for their prompt responses to my emails and phone calls no matter what the issue was, making me feel like Family Law Group was more than just a name—they treated me like family. Highly recommended!

I have nothing but amazing things to say about this firm. Joe, Kimberly, and Kris have gone above and beyond to help me with my case - one that I really didn’t think had enough substance to it to be settled in my favor. Not only did they work hard for me, but they truly cared about making sure I felt honored and heard throughout this whole process. It’s been a rocky road with what I’ve dealt with personally. Without them, I wouldn’t have had the ability to find strength, peace, and justice in what I’ve gone through. I’m in awe of the way they all fought for me. They made me feel like I was family - not just another client. They walked through this with me and worked tirelessly to see it through to the end. I couldn’t have asked for better representation. Thank you, Maher & Maher Law! I’m forever grateful.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
