This law firm is outstanding. My husband and I just had our wills updated and we were so impressed with the care, professionalism, and current knowledge displayed by this law firm. We would especially like to recommend Emma Fletcher for estate planning. Thank you Terri Harrington for building such an outstanding law firm.

Divorce is not fun for anyone. It's particularly hard when people get unpleasant and can't cooperate with each other. This is why I love Terri's approach. She's very focused on an approach where conflict and nastiness are avoided in favor of collaboration and cooperation. I have felt like my needs were met as I have worked through this process - Terri has made herself available to me as I needed support or had questions. I've always walked away from our interactions with a clear understanding of what I needed to do to make sure I was taken care of while still maintaining that sense of collaboration. I'm grateful that I was referred to Terri and will continue to refer others to her.

Terri was recommend to me by a friend and she was very supported through the process of reviewing the premarital documents for my upcoming marriage. It was also in a short timeframe that we had to complete the documents. I am a retired women and she was able to explain the details and made me feel like I did come to the table with a stake in the relationship. Her staff is very friendly and helpful when you email or call into the office. I would recommend her for supportive and kind and very up front attorney.

Terri represented my wife in a friendly divorce; I represented myself. Everything was amiable enough, though stress levels and emotions spiked in different ways at various times. Terri and her staff were patient, friendly, and professional throughout. During our joint mediation sessions Terri was helpful and patient, able to provide simple emotional as well as legal support. It was a pleasure — though that's probably not the right word, given the situation — working with her.

Terri was amazing to work with - her patience and understanding kept me going through a very difficult time. At times I wanted to give up on the collaborative process but she was always able to remind me why I took that path (my children) she was able to empathize with my situation and yet be firm and honest with me when I needed it. Her humor also kept me going through a long difficult mediation process. Her staff was excellent and was always there to answer questions or get me the info I needed. Terri was highly praised by the additional folks we had helping us through the process - counselors and financial people. She was highly respected by the attorney we worked with and I feel the same. I have given her name to many people who have asked for referrals. Terri also has a true commitment to helping children through divorce and strongly believes the collaborative process is the best way for children to thrive after divorce. I have to agree - many people I know have gone through the standard court system and ended up with hard feelings and outcomes they did not want. The collaborative process really helps ensure that everyone agrees on the outcomes and the children are put first in all decisions. As Terri said - 'It's like giving birth - you think you can't stand it anymore and you want to give up and then it's done.' The result was worth every moment of pain and suffering. My ex and I are not best buddies but I think we were able to get out of the marriage and recognize the need for us to work together for our kiddos even if our feelings were hurt. Can't imagine doing it without Terri - thank you Terri.

My daughter suffered a serious head injury because of a company’s negligence. I wanted the best representation I could find for her and I was happy we found Chris. He kept us well informed and fought hard to get my daughter an excellent settlement. I would trust him with any of my family or friends and would recommend him anytime.

When I was hurt, I was only seventeen and did not understand anything about making an injury claim. Mr. Hoffman was patient and answered all of my questions. At first, the insurance company said they wouldn’t pay anything. But Mr. Hoffman did a great job of proving my case and getting me a great settlement so I could pay my bills and have money for my future. He changed my life. He’s the best.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Denver, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
