Pros
1
Knowledgeable, hardworking, and passionate attorneys who fight for their clients
“Meagan Moodie is a hard working, passionate, and knowledgable attorney.”
2
Honest and transparent communication with clients about case details and potential outcomes
“Meagan knew enough, and was honest enough, to tell me the truth about my case.”
3
Dedicated to protecting the best interests of children in custody and divorce cases
“She made sure my kids were always the first priority on our side, and it was very effective.”
4
Provide compassionate support and guidance through difficult legal proceedings
“These two women are absolutely amazing! They are not only attorney/paralegal, but amazing detectives that examine ALL avenues of your case and at the same time a friend when you need a shoulder to lean on.”
5
Highly recommended by satisfied clients for family law matters
“I would give him and the GEM Family law firm more than five stars, they are professional, empathetic and determined. I would recommend them to anyone struggling or needing the best representation, they put their clients first and exceed a 5 star rating in service!”
Cons
1
Issues with communication, responsiveness, and meeting deadlines
“Are you looking for poor communication, empty promises, missed deadlines, extremely slow speed justified (VERY late) by lame excuses, but perfectly timely bills? Then, you found your law firm.”
2
Concerns over billing practices and potential overcharging
“I have more than 40,000 dollars in a divorce that is not yet over. They just don't care, but they do care to charge for each bill for a job they didn't finish.”
3
Inconsistent quality of service, with some attorneys described as unprofessional or biased
“Erica Gebhardt is by far the most unprofessional attorney and CFI. She was assigned as my case's CFI. I paid my retainer and got all of my paperwork in promptly, followed by her taking months to start my case.”
4
Clients feeling that their cases were not adequately represented or that the firm did not have their best interests in mind
“They rolled over and died instead of advocating in custody and child support case... Additionally, I called to make a SINGLE payment on the account; which is not in my name, I did NOT sign an authorization to take funds from my account and yet they have been charging my card every 2 weeks.”
5
Concerns over the firm's handling of child custody investigations and the impartiality of their CFI representatives
“Erika Gebhardt (aka Erika Omer) is everything that is wrong with the legal system. If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having her assigned as your CFI, record every single encounter with her. She's a hot head with an extremely wounded ego, and she will absolutely lie.”

I worked with attorney Heather Landauer and paralegal Brianna Griffey for my family court case. They were always attentive and on top of the issues I was having. Kept me at ease and took my concerns seriously. I was pleased with the knowledge, service, and time I received. I would recommend them to anyone going through a contested family court case.

Erika and her team were amazing!! They went above and beyond in every way possible. Erika was always available to answer my questions no matter what time of day it was. She explained the process every step of the way and was a true advocate for my son and I. I knew she always had my back and she made what was possibly one of the most difficult times in my life, as smooth and seamless as possible. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome and it's all because of Erika. She's professional, down to earth, relatable, crazy smart and the best at what she does. She is my knight in shinning armor and I will forever be grateful for everything she did for me!!

In the beginning it felt like this firm truly had my children's best interest at heart. My case played out for over 3 years. After "winning" at trial with further litigation to take place, I was struck with an uneasy feeling. I felt bullied into a settlement as the attorneys were fed up with my case. Many people had told me over the duration of my case that things weren't quite adding up and that my attorney did not seem to have our best interests at heart. I began to reflect on the case and all the inconsistencies, placating to the other side and capitulating to them as well. I then conferred with another attorney and ended up retaining her services to finish out my case. Upon the new attorney's review of my case, she stated this case was a mess, and she was flabbergasted at all the litigation that was allowed to take place. She mentioned there was a much more direct way to have gone about this case, less money and time wasted, not to mention my children's mental and emotional health. My worst feelings had been confirmed. It is a relief to finally have someone on my case who is truly for the children and not the money.

GEM Family Law was a pivotal reason I found success with my recent divorce. Although, I initially wanted to avoid "hiring a lawyer" I found it absolutely beneficial and key with this complex process by the end. I learned a lot along the way and felt with each personnel I came across in the office or in email or phone was very professional and respectful with my situation. I quickly came to learn, no divorce proceeding was like what I had heard from acquaintances, family or friends. They reminded me along the way of what I could control and what was the law and I needed to remain realistic and open minded with. I truly appreciate their work with my divorce. We were able to avoid mediation and come to terms with opposing counsel with negotiations amongst the lawyers. This was a large savings for me.

My wife and I had a great experience with Sarah. We decided to develop our estate plan right before (and after) the birth of our first child. Sarah was extremely professional, while also displaying a high level of patience with us. I would highly recommend her services.

My daughter suffered a serious head injury because of a company’s negligence. I wanted the best representation I could find for her and I was happy we found Chris. He kept us well informed and fought hard to get my daughter an excellent settlement. I would trust him with any of my family or friends and would recommend him anytime.

When I was hurt, I was only seventeen and did not understand anything about making an injury claim. Mr. Hoffman was patient and answered all of my questions. At first, the insurance company said they wouldn’t pay anything. But Mr. Hoffman did a great job of proving my case and getting me a great settlement so I could pay my bills and have money for my future. He changed my life. He’s the best.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Denver, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
