Pros
1
Responsive and attentive communication
“Anytime I emailed or called, they responded in a timely manner. They explained the whole process and answered all my questions.”
2
Experienced and knowledgeable legal team
“They are extremely knowledgeable and amazing at what they do!”
3
Personalized and professional service
“Every single staff member that I met was extremely professional and friendly.”
Cons
1
Potential dishonesty and lack of transparency
“Jane will give you false hope of success in the name of 'optimism'. She was never candid like this, but instead kept covering her known loss by repeating statements such as 'but we don't know what the judge is going to decide'.”
2
Inexperience and inefficiency
“Jane is inexperienced and will either take a long time to do research or frequently have to go to Gavin to discuss your case. Because the client gets billed for both of these delays, Jane should truly be billing at a lower hourly rate until she becomes more efficient.”
3
Potential overcharging and money-seeking behavior
“Shortly after the initial consultation, I was informed by other firms that my initial filing would have cost $3k on the high end. Jane billed me $10k for this. In addition, she mentioned that should I decide to proceed with an appeal the retainer would increase from $5k to $20k and that the appeal itself would likely cost $20k.”

This review is completely unrelated to the outcome of my case. I felt compelled to write it to caution others to consider other attorneys because you may be able to save yourself thousands of dollars. There are 3 main factors that have led me to write this candid review: 1) Dishonesty, 2) Inexperience, 3) Money-seeking. 1) DISHONESTY: Jane will give you false hope of success in the name of “optimism”. After losing the initial motion, we started discussing a possible appeal. Jane quoted me a chance of success to be up to 50% when in reality it was less than 5% to 15%. Other firms recommended not proceeding with an appeal. To quote one attorney, "...I still don't feel that our firm will have a high potential of prevailing on the requested appeal". Jane was never candid like this, but instead kept covering her known loss by repeating statements such as “but we don’t know what the judge is going to decide”. When confronted about the drastic difference in appeal percentage estimates, Jane said she’s “not a numbers person”. It's difficult to believe that someone who has a doctorate degree and is obviously intelligent does not have an understanding of basic statistics. One can only deduce that she is after money and not the best interest of the client. Had she not taken this approach of “optimism” and a money-grab, I would have taken my ex-husband/abuser up on a different financial offer that would have freed me from him much sooner than 11 years from now. During my final conversation with Jane (after I had declined proceeding with an appeal), Jane commented “I stopped billing you a long time ago”…yet I was billed for every single item thereafter. I always expect to pay my bills, so this is simply the principle of the comment which turned out to be a blatant lie. Your attorney should never lie to you. When I sent an email to Jane and Gavin Halligan (partner) inquiring what she meant by that comment, I never received a reply. 2) INEXPERIENCE: Jane is inexperienced and will either take a long time to do research or frequently have to go to Gavin to discuss your case. Because the client gets billed for both of these delays, Jane should truly be billing at a lower hourly rate until she becomes more efficient. As an example, I was billed $800 for an email response that took nearly a week to receive from her. I thought my attorney had "ghosted" me because she had set a deadline for a decision regarding my appeal, but the responses I needed from her to make a decision were pending that email response. For the initial filing, I provided Jane with the same information at least 5 times because it seemed like it would very specifically address the court rule we were filing under. She did not include the information in the initial filing. She only included it in a response after I mentioned it AGAIN (but a response is not taken into consideration in the judge's ruling - something Jane did not know). After receiving the judge's order denial, it seems my case would have had a better chance if she had included the information I provided repeatedly. When I asked Jane what she would have done differently if she was filing all over again, she said "oh I don't know" and then didn't elaborate further. Clearly, she had not done any self-reflection to learn from this loss for future clients. 3) MONEY-SEEKING: Shortly after the initial consultation, I was informed by other firms that my initial filing would have cost $3k on the high end. Jane billed me $10k for this. In addition, she mentioned that should I decide to proceed with an appeal the retainer would increase from $5k to $20k and that the appeal itself would likely cost $20k. This was immediately unsettling, but she said most firms increase to this amount for appeals. After discussing with 5 other firms found on the same websites, their retainer remained at $5k-$7.5k and were surprised to hear the $20k fee. Be prepared to be billed promptly every 2 weeks to keep your retainer at $5k.

Jane Michalakes was my attorney for my divorce process. Although I had my doubts in the beginning as I thought she was being "too nice" responding to my ex she came through very professionally in the end and put the ex in their place when she needed to. Jane and her team of paralegals/staff at Halligan LLC did a wonderful job at handling all the required documents, mediation, research, being the middle person with the ex, and etc... I would highly recommend them. Thanks again for all your hard work.

My daughter suffered a serious head injury because of a company’s negligence. I wanted the best representation I could find for her and I was happy we found Chris. He kept us well informed and fought hard to get my daughter an excellent settlement. I would trust him with any of my family or friends and would recommend him anytime.

When I was hurt, I was only seventeen and did not understand anything about making an injury claim. Mr. Hoffman was patient and answered all of my questions. At first, the insurance company said they wouldn’t pay anything. But Mr. Hoffman did a great job of proving my case and getting me a great settlement so I could pay my bills and have money for my future. He changed my life. He’s the best.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Denver, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
