Worst experience ever! I spoke with John Coaty regarding HOA law and he had no experience with this type of law even though his firm advertises they do. I had to quote him all the laws and finally asked for his opinion and he had nothing to say except "this is going to be really expensive". He had no clue about the HOA reform laws in CO that happened in 2017 and 2018 and wanted me to explain everything to him. Hello, I need your expertise John, I am not here to educate you. Stay away from this firm, they are a bunch of idiots looking to fleece the public.

John Coaty and his team supported me in a dispute with a builder. John was responsive, informative and straight to the point which I very much appreciated. Will highly recommend them for any legal support and will certainly use them again if needed.

My colleague and I approached Matt with a business idea and need to establish an LLC. This was a first for us, so he walked us through the process in a very professional, but well thought out manner that immediately gave us confidence not only with his services, but also with our new endeavor. Matt spent time with us, asking questions about our business and getting to know the details of our plans so that he could best advise us moving forward. Matt initiated a timeline and checklist of items that we'd need to complete and within a matter of a short couple of weeks, he had us set up and ready to get to work. Matts level of experience and expertise in this area was extremely noticeable and gave us peace of mind from the onset of our discussions. Personable, intelligent, and focused on us. For these reasons, I would strongly recommend Matts services to anyone in need of legal advise and/or with similar circumstances as ours. Thanks a ton, Matt!! Joel

I first met with Matt approximately a year and a half ago, when I decided to establish an LLC. I had looked a several on line, do it yourself sites and just did not feel comfortable. I quickly realized that I needed professional legal assistance, in order to make sure my new LLC was created properly. After meeting with Matt and discussing all my needs, Matt put together a comprehensive plan for my LLC. He helped me decide the best state to establish my LLC in for liability protection, as well as tax benefits. Matt also created my Executive Summary and Operations Agreement. His attention to detail and diligence in looking out for my best interest, was second to none. More importantly, Matt took whatever time was necessary to make sure I fully understood not only the "big picture", but all the nuances of my new LLC. Since then, Matt has reviewed several business contracts for me. Each and every time coming back with a clear and precise answer in a timely manner, along with giving his "your best interest in mind" advice and recommendations. Matt has done such an amazing job with everything I have throw his way, it has led me to currently work with him on my family's Estate Planning. Matt is in the process of putting together a fully customized Trust for me. He has been incredible walking us through the infinite amount of options and legal scenarios, in order to find a plan that best suites my wants and my family's future needs. With Matt, you always feel that you have his full and undivided attention. He establishes a personal relationship, and you never feel like you are "just another client". He always answer questions, phone messages, emails, quickly. Often the same day, usually within an hour. You never feel forgotten about, or that your issues and questions are not important. I trust Matt fully with any and all legal affairs concerning my LLC and Estate. I would have zero hesitation recommending Matt to my closest friends and family. I think you will be hard pressed to find a better, more knowledgeable, honest, hard working and sincere Lawyer anywhere. -Chris

Howard was a professional in all aspects of his handling my case. He explained things very clearly and went to great lengths to make sure I was prepared. Howard is very concerned about making sure everything is done correctly and in accordance with the law. After working with Howard I have a great deal of respect for him and how he conducts himself in the court room. I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking the services he provides.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Evergreen, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
