Attorney David Johnson did a fantastic job in helping me resolve my case with the best outcome realistically possible. Throughout the experience of the hearing and the court case, he was knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated to ensuring I received the best possible outcome for my case. From our very first meeting in December, he went out of the way to explain everything to me in terms I could easily understand and both David Johnson and his assistant Lisa Ritter, were both extremely responsive and willing to go above and beyond to answer my questions outside of our meetings. I'm immensely appreciative of his time and commitment to supporting me during what was a very emotionally exhausting court case. I would strongly encourage anyone looking for a defense attorney who will fight tirelessly for them to hire Attorney David Johnson, he is an exceptional lawyer, and I am profoundly grateful for his service.

I hired David Johnson for a pretty tough case and he his assistant Lisa did a great job of just listening. After discussing the situation he quickly had a plan, which was discussed and implemented. David Johnson understands your situation, and looks for quick resolve. His assistant Lisa & David were very quick to respond to questions, or to get a response from the courts. David was very knowledgeable when it came to law and my situation. I followed his direction every step of the way as he guided me throughout the process. It is very important to retain and hire a lawyer who understands the jurisdiction of where your case is held. He understands the system. It’s important. It was a pleasure working with David on my situation, and I would highly recommend an attorney who listens and understands. If quick results with a desirable outcome is what your after please give David Johnson and his team a call.

When selecting representation for my daughter's DUI case, David was the only lawyer who took the time to listen to me as a parent and really show compassion and understanding of our situation. Not only are his fees reasonable, but his knowledge and experience gave us all comfort that my daughter would be in good hands. It was the first time she'd ever been in any sort of legal trouble, so he was able to give us calm during a very scary and unknown period of time. Since we are not from Colorado it was crucial that there was good communication and explanation of Colorado law and process. He took the time to meet via zoom conference all with all of us several times during the process up through the court date. He was very responsive to all our questions and walked us through what was likely to happen. What impressed me most about David is that he got my daughter working on some of the things ahead of time that the courts generally order you do after the court date. So by the time the court date came around, she was nearly done with almost everything except the community service. Most everyone who processed paperwork after the court date was really impressed with how far ahead she was, which means she got really GREAT advice from David. Despite being a very stressful period for my daughter, who was also trying to get through her freshman year at CSU, he managed to turn a very fearful situation into something manageable, understandable, and no so scary. She will be finished with her supervised probation soon and her record sealed after one year. We've all learned valuable lessons and will never forget David for how much care he showed our family, and how calming and effective he was in resolving the case. Paul

Susan has experience on both sides of the law. A former prosecutor, judge and now a defense attorney she can professionally and competently navigate the judicial system to your best advantage. She knows the in/outs of the system, what works best for you and has the experience you are in need of. I was accused of 3rd degree assault with a domestic violence enhancer. Using her knowledge of the system, her relationships with Prosecutors and her expertise in working criminal cases, all the charges were dropped without ever going to trail. As a matter of fact I never talked to anyone, never met with a Prosecutor/D.A. or had to see the insides of a court room. Great job, professional service and fantastic advice.

I retained Mr. Elmore after about a year of failed attempts at handling my home loan modification, on my own. I was facing foreclosure and was feeling a bit misled and somewhat bullied by my mortgage company. I had previously attempted to retain a different lawyer, who informed me that it was hopeless and furthermore she was amazed that I was still in my home. On a friend's referral, I called Mr. Elmore. Right from the start he was very confident, which I needed, as well as informative. He detailed what the process would entail, including my resposibilites and a timeline. Along the way I chose to file bankruptcy, which he had initially informed me was an option available to me. The banckruptcy and loan modification were both successful and I'm sleeping soundly again. There were no surprises along the way and his fee was perfectly reasonable. I'm more than happy with Kevin Elmore.

Kevin was very a good attorney during this very difficult time in which me and my husband had to file Bankruptsy. He was always there to answer any of my questions and was very clear. He even explained 2 or 3 times if I did not understand, untill I did. I would defintly recomend him to another person.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fort Collins, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
