Marissa wasn't actually able to represent me, but she is amazing. Full of integrity, wit and kindness, she gave me her time, suggestions and truly helpful advice; she helped me find the right path, even if she was only a stepping stone. That is a sure sign of someone you want on your side.

Marissa went above and beyond the call of duty handling a multi-faceted divorce that seemed never ending. She is steady and will pay attention to details that matter. A mentor, strong advocate for your rights in a domestic violence related case and will keep you going when you feel overwhelmed with litigation and taxing motions. She is worth every penny. My family is forever grateful.

After working with Marissa on an extremely taxing case I can 100% say my mind about attorneys has been changed for the better. Marissa is empathetic, while being realistic and most importantly full of integrity. Being at the mercy of legal system is a tough place to be, even harder with an extremely difficult opposing party. Marissa has consistently been the calm and steady navigator we needed in this trying case and I could never thank her enough for the hard work, dedication, and heart she has given my case.

I had the pleasure of working with Josiah Silverstein and his firm, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the experience. He is an outstanding lawyer and demonstrates exceptional skill in court, especially when dealing with very vexatious co-parents. His efficiency and understanding are remarkable, and he consistently maintains excellent communication throughout the process. Thanks to his expertise and dedication, we achieved amazing results swiftly even when others said I simply could not prevail. I highly recommend Josiah Silverstein for anyone in need of superior legal solutions in challenging Family Law situations.

I was originally referred to Maureen O'Brien at O'Brien, Thomas and Bibek, LLC law firm by my personal attorney. Maureen was unable to take my case due to illness but she recommended David and he accepted my case. David provided invaluable professional and discreet assistance in the court room while handling my case. He spoke to the judge and the district attorney on my behalf on several occasions while we were both in the court room. He negotiated a reduction in charges with the district attorney that changed my potential conviction of a felony to a misdemeanor. David also led me through the required paperwork and after I fulfilled my court ordered probation requirements, achieve early termination of my probation. I again, highly recommend David Thomas as a criminal defense attorney.

Dave accepted my case and went right to work. He provided great information, guidance and expertise. He was also very prompt with communication and professional throughout the entire criminal process. He guided me through the decision process of a plea agreement or a trial and gave me the pros and cons of both decisions.

Dave Thomas is an exceptional attorney! we highly recommend him, for anyone seeking an ethical, caring attorney, who will work to get the best resolution for your case. From our first meeting with Dave to discuss our son’s case, it was clear that he is a passionate advocate for his clients. In our time working with him, we never felt rushed or unheard. Dave always took the time needed to address our questions and concerns and to explain the often-confusing legal process. He was very upfront with us from the start, giving possible outcomes of the case and what we should expect. We appreciated his honesty in telling us what we needed to know and not what we wanted to hear. Well respected both in the community and within the legal system, Dave also has extensive courtroom experience. He has worked as both a district attorney and defense lawyer, allowing him to easily navigate the legal system. Dave is a consummate professional on every level. Putting our trust and faith in Dave, was the best decision we could have made.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Golden, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
