I learned acting fast after an injury to find support to ensure my legal rights. Kaplan Morrell's staff is kind, knowledgeable, and efficient. Work comp law is very detailed and complicated; Sheila told me which rights and policies I was entitled to. I had real hope for the first time in 5 years that I might be restored to my pre-accident strength and gait. To enlist Sheila is to be shepherded through the complexities was Brandi Halley. This is where you feel like competent people have your interests in mind. I wish I'd found them sooner.

BEST REVIEW I CAN GIVE!!! Sheila Toborg, my attorney and her complete staff have taken such great and detailed care of everything pertaining to my workman's comp claim. I knew absolutely nothing about how to represent myself, and they literally did it all. If I had anything I didn't understand, Sheila was very patient with me, and would take the time to explain, and make sure I understood the process of what to expect. I'm so VERY THANKFUL for their complete and thorough attention to all the process I had to go through. THANK YOU KAPLAN MORRELL LAW & SHEILA TOBORG & STAFF! You truly took care of everything for me! They definitely deserve a 5๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ rating!!!๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿซถ

I fell down the stairs at my job and spent months back and forth with doctors and physical therapy only to find out I had indeed broken my ankle. After surgery and what should have been a simple recovery, I was still in pain and living with limited mobility. It was at this point of spending a year in the workers comp system that I decided I needed assistance from people who could help me navigate and have my best interest at heart. Talking with them over the phone allowed me to get a sense of who they are at Kaplan Morrell. They cared from day one about myself and my well being. Through various doctors and appointments, treatments, moving and helping with finding continued care and court hearings; Mr Kaplan and Tammy (his paralegal) were there every step of the way. I appreciate that they understood that talking to me over the phone would go farther than an email and help calm my nerves and head from running wild. Trust me, this whole process is emotional and takes its toll. They took the time to explain everything (and I mean every question I had) having to do with IMEs, Settlement Hearings and the like in order to make sure that I was comfortable with my decisions in the process. Itโ€™s been a long 6 years of me making sure that I am taking care of myself and maintaining my continued care treatments; all while Mr Kaplan and Tammy worked behind the scenes making sure things were going smoothly to reduce gaps in care. I appreciate that they treated myself and husband like I we are members of their own families and helped me make the best decisions for myself and wellbeing. Without them, the care I had been able to maintain would have not happened and I donโ€™t know where my pain, mobility and health would be today. Itโ€™s with the highest of esteem that I would recommend this small firm that treats you like family and not another case on their workload. Their whole team means the world to me and I cannot thank them enough.

I was in a pinch. I mean I was in a lot of trouble. I went to talk to the DA without a lawyer and it was horrible. I hired Chris and he worked miracles, but what makes him so good is, that I thought I had a great deal and was happy as could be. It wasnโ€™t good enough for him though. He definitely fights for his clients, and gets the best possible outcome.

Chris assisted me with a legal matter and I was very happy with every aspect of the experience. He took the time to make sure I understood the process, explained the law, and fully explored all of my options so I could make an informed decision. He negotiated a favorable outcome and I was very pleased with the results. He genuinely seemed to care about my case and I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of legal assistance.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Greeley, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
