I hired Megan Sheer after meeting with several of the top family law attorneys in Denver. My case was high conflict with custody and assets involved. It was the most stressful time in my life. She and her team did an excellent job. What set her apart was her understanding of my family’s needs, her ability to advocate for my children, and her knowledge of the process. She guided me through everything with a sense of expertise that put me at ease. My divorce is final now and I am fully satisfied with the services provided by Megan and her office. Her paralegal team was also excellent and helped me immeasurably with all of the paperwork and disclosures.

Megan has been a savior for us in a very high conflict case. I'm not sure how we would have gone through the past few years without her help. Simply put, she treats every decision and fight as if she were making and doing it for her own family and children.

I hired Ms. Sherr for a divorce proceeding. She had me hire an outside financial consultant as this was not part of her expertise. I realized going through the process that I received poor or mis-information from her where it involved financial issues when the outside consultant was not there or consulted.

Megan Sherr is a really fantastic lawyer. When we found her, our case was in very poor shape. We'd been badly represented by our prior attorneys and our chid was really suffering. My ex was extremely aggressive and our prior attorneys had failed to respond to a motion that left our child unprotected on issues that were important for his overall well-being. Megan stepped in and was very clear, explaining to us all of our options in plain english. She was extremely smart and her strategies were often spot on. She'd also listen to us and incorporate our suggestions when she thought it would make our case stronger. She kept our child at the forefront (something our other attorneys did not) which was so important for what he needed at that time of his life. When it came down to it, she advocated for strongly for him, calling out the dangerous behavior my ex was engaging in. In the end she turned our case around 100% (with the support a good team) and we got everything we asked for for our child, and more. I'll never forget that moment in court, as the judge was reading the ruling, the enormous relief I felt at having prevailed (knowing my child would have what he needed to thrive) after months of very intense stress. I strongly recommend Megan to you.

I'm currently a client of Ms. Sherr's and couldn't be happier with her perfessionalism and knowledge of the law. This has been a nasty divorce at best and Ms. Sherr has always been straight forward and honest. She has never sugar coated anything and explained everything in great detail. She follows up quickly and thoroughly. She is willing to be tough when necessary and has been helpful to me through the whole proceedings, and helping with issues that aren't always divorce related.

When I met Nathan Dowell, I knew immediately I would hire him to represent me. He has great communication skills and goes after what needs to be done. He and his paralegal, Karen Yurack, are quite the power team. Karen is very supportive, and they work in sync. You definitely want them on your side, as they went above and beyond to help.

Kristin Weaver and Sarah Pisk were lifesavers for my family and I in the custody battle with my ex. They really took the time to understand my unique situation, and advocated for my children and I throughout my entire time working with them. I really appreciate their understanding and diligence throughout a tricky and stressful case. Would highly recommend them!

Spoke with Todd who understood my case immediately and was fantastic!! Met with Laurie Joe and she handled my difficult case with precision!! Listened and explained every action and knew what to do with professionalism and experience!! She made the other parties attorney look foolish and lazy and got the results I wanted. Hopefully won’t need them again-but if I do, I know who I am calling!!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Greenwood Village, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
