Alan and Molly have been so great to work with. I sought their legal help out for my personal injury from an auto accident and they were very compassionate and helpful every step of the way for over the 2 years that my claim was on-going. They were always very responsive, and most of all helped me get a full payout with the at-fault drivers insurance company. Very thankful I found the pleasant team of Alan and Molly to support me. My own insurance, American Family unfortunately would not offer me anything for my underinsured motorist liability, so I will be switching insurance carriers, but at the very least I got all of my past medical bills covered as well as a little extra (not as much as I hoped for though) for some future medical bills, thanks to Alan and Molly's dedication and help. I highly recommend hiring Alan and Molly because they truly care about trying to get you the highest compensation possible, even with the general corruption of the insurance industry not paying out claims fairly.

Alan was referred to me after 3 of the "Big Boys" declined to look at my case...the best possible outcome! Alan has been incredible in the handling of my case and with the help of his trusty sidekick Molly, I received more compensation than I ever thought was possible. I would whole heartedly encourage anyone seeking reliable, honest and caring representation to look no further than Alan Shafner. Thank you Alan and Molly for your hard work on my behalf!! Over the years, SHAFNER Law has been an invaluable point of contact for counsel. After life altering circumstances, I call upon Alan! I absolutely value his representation and reputation as a strong advocate for justice. He is my immediate-go-to whenever an unfortunate situation diminishes my being.

Alan has been a leading attorney in the area of personal injury law in Colorado for years. This is evidenced by the number of attorneys that go to Alan for guidance. I consider myself lucky that Alan is so generous with his time in discussing legal matters with me. It shows how Alan not only strives to be an excellent attorney for his clients, but also helps to raise the bar for other attorneys.

Great legal representation, was always honest with me, kept me on the loop with everything he did, answered all my questions and explained everything piece by piece is something I cannot say Alan did for me now I know why he told me to rate him on here as soon as he thought I was happy cuz as soon as I would’ve gave him a five star review and wrote something nice like he said then I couldn’t have took it back so highly don’t recommend him to anyone I asked fr my file he sent it to me and I found out a lot of things he had done without asking me or even telling me about it then right after he sent me my file he blocked my phone number so like I said very unprofessional forsure don’t fall for him. Hope he don’t “contact Google” for this matter cuz I was a real “client so don’t let him fool you

When I met Nathan Dowell, I knew immediately I would hire him to represent me. He has great communication skills and goes after what needs to be done. He and his paralegal, Karen Yurack, are quite the power team. Karen is very supportive, and they work in sync. You definitely want them on your side, as they went above and beyond to help.

Kristin Weaver and Sarah Pisk were lifesavers for my family and I in the custody battle with my ex. They really took the time to understand my unique situation, and advocated for my children and I throughout my entire time working with them. I really appreciate their understanding and diligence throughout a tricky and stressful case. Would highly recommend them!

Spoke with Todd who understood my case immediately and was fantastic!! Met with Laurie Joe and she handled my difficult case with precision!! Listened and explained every action and knew what to do with professionalism and experience!! She made the other parties attorney look foolish and lazy and got the results I wanted. Hopefully won’t need them again-but if I do, I know who I am calling!!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Greenwood Village, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
