I have been a practicing attorney for a few years and recently I received a complaint from a former client. The former client made a number of unfounded allegations and demanded a large sum of money to settle the claims. I called my malpractice carrier feeling nervous and worried; shortly after that call I met with June Laird. She was professional, compassionate and intelligent. After reviewing the complaint, facts and documents with June I felt much better about the case. She wrote a concise, thoughtful and easy-to-understand letter to the Attorney Regulation Counsel. She explained why each of my former client's claims was without merit. June kept me in the loop as she wrote the letter and regularly sought my input. Unfortunately, June was injured during the course of my case. Despite her injury, she still kept me well informed. She told me that she was in the hospital and would be working on my case and still met the deadline. Shortly after submitting the letter in response to the complaint, we received a letter from ARC informing us that even if the client were able to prove his/her claims, they did not represent a violation of the law or the professional rules of conduct. It felt good to have a third-party neutral validate my feelings. June was exceptional - as an attorney I hope to provide the same level of competence and commitment to my clients.

I have known Jill for over 10 years. Her advise and professionalism as well as her easy going attitude are refreshing. If she doesn't know something, which has only occurred once in my presence, she doesn't pander and make something up - she does her research and gets back to you.

Courtney took my case and made it feel like it was her own. She took the time to fully understand the case history, what my goals were and why I was advocating for them. She continually kept me in the loop with updates and communications throughout. Once we went to court, Courtney blew me away. She was incredibly well composed yet tenacious as her intellectual prowess became apparent. I watched in awe as she methodically tore apart each and every opposing argument. It felt like I had been vindicated after all the previous years with other attorneys which I attribute that to both Courtney’s intellect as well as her desire to understand the case on a personal level.

Courtney Mcconomy is a superior attorney at this firm. Rare find, she predicts and strategizes her moves. I would like to thank Courtney for being thorough, organized, and persistent. It was a total check and mate to the other party who's goals and actions were unjustified. All best to you Courtney and your team!

I can't begin to explain what an amazing attorney Courtney McConomy is. She responds quickly to emails and calls, explains all of the options clearly and is an absolute fighter for what you want in your divorce or child custody matter. For many people, this is one of the hardest and scariest things they have had to deal with in their lives, and Courtney (along with her amazing paralegal, Daniel) hold your hand along the way. Courtney is so knowledgeable and provides a wealth of knowledge and experience in a variety of Metro counties. She is on multiple boards and groups so she has lots of connections to draw from. What I also appreciate about Courtney is that if she doesn't know an answer (which is rare), she is not afraid to say that and get the answer from her awesome team at this firm. When you hire Courtney you are not just getting her, you are hiring a great firm. Courtney is always there to listen, take notes and provide a calmness to the room. I have done multiple mediations with her and each time she provides creative solutions to a situation that seemed to be insurmountable. I have and will continue to recommend Courtney to friends who need a strong, smart and hardworking attorney who can handle even the toughest of cases.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Greenwood Village, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
