If you're looking for an attorney to guide you through a divorce, you can stop looking now. You just found her. Shea will listen to you, give you all the info you need, and allow you to make an informed decision. She consistently kept me informed, and promptly responded when I reached out to her. Her communications are clear and easy to understand. I genuinely felt like I was her only client. My ex had the opposite experience with her attorney, which solidified for me, that I made the correct decision in going with Shea. Hire her today, you won't regret it.

Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable, experienced, and professional attorney
“Shea is very knowledgeable, honest and a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend her for any family law needs.”
2
Personalized and caring approach, treats clients as a priority
“The big difference with Shea is that she works with you, and she's personally involved in your case.”
3
Excellent communication and responsiveness
“Shea was always proactive and seemed to genuinely care about my case, which is a rare quality in an attorney. I was frankly shocked by how professional and proactive she was, she was always on top of every issue and remembered things that I even forgot along the way.”
4
Provides realistic and honest advice, not just telling clients what they want to hear
“Shea's the best, I don't have enough good things to say!! If you've never worked with other professionals you may not fully understand how far ahead of everyone else she is, but I have, and I was extremely impressed.”
5
Able to efficiently navigate complex legal processes and achieve favorable outcomes
“Shea helped me to see the process, understand it and target what I wanted out of this in the end. Because of Shea's help I was able to have a less chaotic experience than other people I know have had with their divorces and not using Shea.”
Cons
1
Unresponsive and lack of communication in some cases
“If your case is slightly complex and you want someone who is communicative, Shea isn't your person. I worked with Shea for a couple of weeks and ended up having to find a new lawyer because Shea did not handle miscommunication well, and she wasn't open to feedback or being questioned on anything.”
2
Potential ethical concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest
“On July 29, she contacted me back and we were in communication for 11 days via email (August 2, 6 and 8). But she suddenly disappeared and stopped replying to my messages with no explanations which seemed strange to me. A couple weeks later I found out, just by chance that she was working as the legal representative of my then wife. The area of my concerns that I shared with her by email was the area where I was most attacked by Shea Burchill months later during my divorce process. What a lack of ethics!”

If we could, we would give James Shanor a higher rating than allowed. James expertly resolved our contentious home co-ownership dispute and navigated a very honest, reasonable result that was 30% higher than the other party’s original offer. If you need to get out of a sticky situation for a very fair, less than excepted attorney cost, he’s the lawyer who can get the job done.

Mark did a great job with my motorcycle accident. We didn't have to pay back my health insurer anything and all my medical bills were paid. After a short law suit we settled for over 300k. The insurer offered me almost nothing before I hired Mark. He earned every part of his fee and then some.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Longmont, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
