I would highly recommend hiring James as your attorney. He was thorough, attentive, and easy to work with. We initially met with other attorneys and were really disappointed that it felt like they only cared about the money they would make. We met with James and it was a no brainer to hire him. It was instantly obvious that he cared about the outcome of our case, and worked closely with us every step of the way. The price was very fair, and he was worth everything we paid him. He is a very personable attorney, easy to talk to, and will always give you his honest opinion. We really feel like we got the best deal possible, and we're extremely happy we found James to be on our side.

I find it very weird all yo ur reviews disappeared but don’t worry I got screen shots of those. Ladies and gentlemen don’t go here. I mean it. Don’t go here. Go do your research and talk with multiple lawyers. This man is not a good lawyer. My review will disappear in months. Please watch your selves and your finical future this man will gut those. For not any positive or good work. Go check in with multiple lawyers before him.

James was a very caring attorney who took the time to get to know me and my husband during my case. We had conversations about other things besides my case and this showed me how much he wanted to get to know his clients beyond only what the court system sees. I called him and before he would agree to represent me, he wanted to meet in person. I felt that this really showed how he wanted to help people and cared about the work that he does. He was very honest from the beginning about what I was facing and what could potentially happen and helped me to come up with a plan to get the best possible outcome. He was very blunt on his legal advice and gave explanations along the way. When I was unsure of something and had questions, he took the time to make sure that he was giving the best answers. I didn’t feel like he was just doing his job for the money, especially when he always asked me how I was doing whenever we talked and ensured that we had a plan going forward about what I needed to do. He even worked with me on a payment plan, which really helped me out in know that he did care about what I was going through and wanted to help. He’s a great attorney with a lot of life and legal experience and expertise.

Mr. Zimmerman has helped me with problems only a exceptional attorney could handle on multiple occasions with different legal issues. On a scale of one to ten, ten being best I would give him a ten plus.

I had a workers' comp case, which I thought was complicated by other events at work. Mike is very straightforward and informs you what is important in workers' comp law and what is not. He is very straightforward on what your case is worth, and explains injury caps. Working with Pinnacol, he selected an independent doctor who was 100% on my side helping our case. Joann was great about leaving messages, on my phone and following up with email. I felt like I didn't have to fight anymore and trusted him to do it for me and he did a great job.

We hired Jeff Althaus to help us with all things estate, wills, and trusts. What can be daunting, confusing and heavy discussions, Jeff made easy and at times enjoyable. We appreciated his detailed itinerary of our homework assignments after each meeting, the thoroughness of explaining all the documents, the depth to which he took us on how to consider our wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and caregivers in the event of our passing. We are very grateful we have this completed and feel confident in our hiring of Jeff to help us with the process.

Chris took care of all my current estate needs and provided me with valuable guidance as to every facet I needed to address, including things I did not think about. In particular, I needed a beneficial deed for my property which was a little more complex than the usual deed, and he was able to produce exactly the deed I needed. I enjoyed working with him and if I need anything else later in this arena, I will be working with him again. A pleasure to work with!

We had to add our home to our trust. We worked with Ben and he explained it all in simple terms. Appointment times were kept which I appreciate as our time is just as valuable as theirs. The tasks were completed as promised and on schedule. I would not hesitate to recommend or use Althaus Law again for any estate planning needs.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Northglenn, Colorado?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
