Amy Zabetakis and Sarah Mead handled my recent property purchase in Stamford and were absolutely wonderful. If you're looking for professional, responsive and extremely helpful attorneys to handle a real estate transaction, these are the people you need. They answered all my questions in under a day and always kept me updated with their progress throughout. Of course I can only comment on this firm from a real estate perspective, but given they were so well organized and professional I would not hesitate to use their services for another area of the law.

Attorney Reilly represented me in a highly contentious matter. He advocated and defended me zealously and was a pleasure to work with. George is respected in the courthouse, highly intelligent and knows the law. He carried me through a very difficult period in my life and I could not be more grateful. I highly recommended having Attorney Reilly on your family’s team.

George Reilly represented me in what was a complicated and "interesting" case. He strove to bring the matter to as quick a solution as possible, while assiduously advocating for my rights and a great practical outcome. I never waited for a response to my calls and emails; he always got right back to me. He listened to my concerns and represented them rapidly and thoroughly to the defendant's counsel. His knowledge of the law is extensive, and when a sticky matter arose, he researched and came back with authoritative and creative arguments. Above all, while counseling me as to the law and my options, he worked to honor my wishes when possible, and to discuss alternatives when my own understanding was insufficient to the legal matters at hand. (And he listened to all my confusion and stress as the case progressed!) I was extremely happy with the settlement to my case!

George represented me on a dissolution case involving a complexity of delicate dimensions requiring listening, understanding, and developing a fair, mutually-acceptable solution, with specific timeframes and objectives in mind. George was already known and trusted by the other party, which defused the situation partially to begin with, a tribute to prior interaction. Further, George was then quick to understand the complexities noted above, and took ample time to listen, take all input, and thoughtfully contemplate, then educate me on alternatives. I felt this approach enabled a mutually-acceptable framework, which left the real dialogue to how much various dials should be turned within that framework. Knowing the combustibility, George and his collaborator on the other side of the aisle were able to argue their points toward success, recognizing everyone was at least on the same road. This resulted in a complete agreement for which both parties cited satisfaction, after years of false starts, overreactions, histrionics, and general instability in the case. Fundamentally, George was respectful, responsive, and listened before educating or presuming. This allowed me to feel that I 'owned' the framework of the agreement, as I helped to co-author the structure and variables alongside George, and given all his guidance of pitfalls, which were aptly avoided. I highly recommend George to anyone with these sorts of complex variables, where navigation of an ever-changing minefield is imperative.

I have used Tim Butler's legal services for over 10 years. He brings a broad range of legal expertise that includes litigation/arbitration, business contract design and interpretation, and employee relations. Over the years he has provided ongoing guidance and legal advice that have resulted in the successful resolution of many business related issues. He takes the time to investigate issues upfront and does not always use litgation as the means to resolve business issues. He remains mindful of the cost implications of taking legal action but never at the expense of service and qulaity of legal advice. His negotation skills are exceptional. He is very responsive and completely trustworthy. His integrity is without question. I highly recommend Tim. Tim has successfully handled several large commercial debt collection cases on my company's behalf and successfully negotiated resolution prior to trial in most cases. He revamped our contract language, provided guidance to protect our intellectual capital

We hired Tim and his firm to help on a managed care dispute where we felt we were owed a significant amount of money and were having difficulties resolving it independently. They handled the case impeccably. Their inside knowledge of the company and the people involved was instrumental and helped expedite things. They researched our claims thoroughly and put together a case that was almost impossible to dispute. Most importantly, they were appropriately aggressive and achieved an extremely favorable outcome for us but did it in a way that allowed us to maintain a cordial continuing relationship with the company. We have dealt with many lawyers and many firms and this was one of the most satisfying experiences I have ever had. On a personal level, Tim was a pleasure to work with. He is calm, reassuring, does not patronize, lays out both the good and the bad, is timely and stands by his work. Everyone at the firm was professional and always helpful. I do not typically write reviews but feel that I must acknowledge the high quality work we received. I would recommend Tim and his firm as strongly as I could.

My dad recommended I use Wilder Gleason for my first house purchase. I am glad I did. He was knowledgeable about the zoning and flood issues and pushed to make sure the proper permits were in place. He made sure my interests were protected and risks minimized despite a non-contingent bid. He and his paralegal, Donna, did a great job!

I have referred many clients to Wilder Gleason for buying and selling real estate. They are always happy with Wilder’s work, so I hired him to help sell my house. I found out why my clients were so happy. Wilder and his team communicate, anticipate problems, propose effective solutions and make the process smooth, efficient and, to the extent possible, stress free. I could not be happier with his service and will continue to recommend that clients use Wilder.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Darien, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
