A few months back, I ran into a problem with the university I was attending at the time. To make a long story short, I made an honest mistake with one of my courses, and because of it, I was not allowed to graduate. After a few weeks of back and forth between myself and my university, it became abundantly clear that I was not getting anywhere with them. I reached out to multiple attorneys, most of whom I called but never responded. The attorneys that did respond wanted thousands of dollars upfront before they would even talk to me. Frustrated and out of options, I contacted the HCBA, who then referred me to Ms. McKeon.I was quite nervous before I finally summoned the courage to call Ms. McKeon, as speaking to an attorney is often an unpleasant experience. However, this was not the case with Ms. McKeon. Not only was she very patient and understanding during our first conversation, but every conversation thereafter. Whenever I had a question, I would contact Ms. McKeon, and though her schedule was rather busy, she always took the time to respond to me either by phone or email. With Ms. McKeon's help, I was able to both avoid litigation with my university and finally be allowed to graduate. Had it not been for Ms. McKeon's consul, it is very unlikely that I would have achieved the same outcome on my own, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

I have used Tim Butler's legal services for over 10 years. He brings a broad range of legal expertise that includes litigation/arbitration, business contract design and interpretation, and employee relations. Over the years he has provided ongoing guidance and legal advice that have resulted in the successful resolution of many business related issues. He takes the time to investigate issues upfront and does not always use litgation as the means to resolve business issues. He remains mindful of the cost implications of taking legal action but never at the expense of service and qulaity of legal advice. His negotation skills are exceptional. He is very responsive and completely trustworthy. His integrity is without question. I highly recommend Tim. Tim has successfully handled several large commercial debt collection cases on my company's behalf and successfully negotiated resolution prior to trial in most cases. He revamped our contract language, provided guidance to protect our intellectual capital

We hired Tim and his firm to help on a managed care dispute where we felt we were owed a significant amount of money and were having difficulties resolving it independently. They handled the case impeccably. Their inside knowledge of the company and the people involved was instrumental and helped expedite things. They researched our claims thoroughly and put together a case that was almost impossible to dispute. Most importantly, they were appropriately aggressive and achieved an extremely favorable outcome for us but did it in a way that allowed us to maintain a cordial continuing relationship with the company. We have dealt with many lawyers and many firms and this was one of the most satisfying experiences I have ever had. On a personal level, Tim was a pleasure to work with. He is calm, reassuring, does not patronize, lays out both the good and the bad, is timely and stands by his work. Everyone at the firm was professional and always helpful. I do not typically write reviews but feel that I must acknowledge the high quality work we received. I would recommend Tim and his firm as strongly as I could.

Amy Zabetakis and Sarah Mead handled my recent property purchase in Stamford and were absolutely wonderful. If you're looking for professional, responsive and extremely helpful attorneys to handle a real estate transaction, these are the people you need. They answered all my questions in under a day and always kept me updated with their progress throughout. Of course I can only comment on this firm from a real estate perspective, but given they were so well organized and professional I would not hesitate to use their services for another area of the law.

My dad recommended I use Wilder Gleason for my first house purchase. I am glad I did. He was knowledgeable about the zoning and flood issues and pushed to make sure the proper permits were in place. He made sure my interests were protected and risks minimized despite a non-contingent bid. He and his paralegal, Donna, did a great job!

I have referred many clients to Wilder Gleason for buying and selling real estate. They are always happy with Wilder’s work, so I hired him to help sell my house. I found out why my clients were so happy. Wilder and his team communicate, anticipate problems, propose effective solutions and make the process smooth, efficient and, to the extent possible, stress free. I could not be happier with his service and will continue to recommend that clients use Wilder.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Darien, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
