I want to share what I wrote to Bill below the day after my sentencing. All I can say is Bill is much more than an attorney and he has set the bar high. Hey Bill Thank you so much for yesterday and being a true support through this process. I don’t think I would have gotten through this with out your constant support and help, you are a true gentleman and one of the fairest people I have ever met. I can never repair you for being who you are. Thank you, my wife thanks you, my boys thank you as does my family. I kept telling my wife that it would be a huge relief and today would be so much better as you told me and it is certainly true.

After getting slapped with misdemeanor arrest, I decided to hire Attorney Bill Paeztold. He did a phenomenal job from start to finish, as I was able to get my case dismissed in a timely manner. He did everything he absolutely needed to do and I am very fortunate to have had an attorney like him represent me. If you're looking for an attorney who is responsive, respected, and caring for his clients, then Attorney Bill Paeztold is the perfect fit. I highly recommend him!

Attorney Paetzold was worth every penny that he was paid and performed like I paid him millions. He was very reasonable and delivered the best possible outcome that I should of received. I would highly recommend him for any criminal case. Very knowledgeable of criminal law and the way to deal with the prosecutor and the court system. A very good attorney that was reachable at all times and responded to every concern that I had.

Unlike the decision that landed me in trouble to begin with, my decision to obtain the assistance of William Paetzold was among the best decisions of my life. My case was serious and complex, and taking the time to choose the best counsel I could find was of paramount importance. Friends and family had already chosen a lawyer for me while I was hospitalized, but knowing the complex nature of my case, and the fact that I had aggravating factors working against me, I didn’t feel entirely convinced that my lawyer had the experience, wisdom, and networking ability to give me a decent shot at a good outcome. I began to interview a number of other attorneys, certain that my search would take weeks, if not months. William Paetzold was the ninth attorney I interviewed, but I left his office knowing, beyond any doubt, that my search was over. Watching Attorney Paetzold work over the past year was a revelation in what an art-form the work of a talented defense attorney is. He approached every court session with the deft touch and strategic acumen of a master chess-player. At no time did I feel that he didn’t have complete mastery of this complicated landscape. It became quickly obvious to me that he’d spent many years cultivating close working relationships with Connecticut’s judges, prosecutors, and other defense attorneys, and that they hold him in the highest regard. It also was plainly apparent that the practice of criminal defense law is more than merely a profession, but a calling for him. It’s easy to see when someone is doing something that they’re innately good at, and something that gives his life great meaning. He took a genuine personal interest in my plight, and in shielding my family and I from a disaster that would have done incalculable long-term damage to us. Attorney Paetzold is truly engaged in the work that he was born to do, which made it incredibly reassuring to have him as my advocate; a feeling that only increased with time. Every step of the way, Bill was there for us. Not only was he glad to talk to us at any time, but he kept in close contact with us, making sure that everything I did was geared toward giving us every possible advantage. He left no stone unturned, looking for anything that might be even remotely helpful to us, and made sure I was aware of any misstep along the way that might hurt our chances. Even though I knew he was in demand as a defense attorney, I never felt like I was anything but his most important client. At the time I first entered Bill’s office, myself and everyone I knew were almost certain that I would be spending a few years in prison. By the time he collected all the pertinent information, he was able to assure me that he could help me avoid jail time. Against all odds, I was sentenced to probation. I’m convinced that my choice of Bill as my attorney is the only reason I’m a free man at this time, and why my family isn’t suffering a devastating financial and psychological blow. I’m also convinced that this past year would have been a hellish nightmare with anyone else, feeling completely unsure about our family’s future. My family and I owe Bill a debt of gratitude that we could never repay, and we wholeheartedly and without reservation give him the highest recommendations.

I only have great things to say about Attorney Paetzold. He helped me with my daughter's case, not only in court, but by working hard. He kept me informed throughout the process and his presence the day of court was strong and compassionate. He spent the entire morning with me and my daughter giving us support and a positive attitude. The outcome of the case was excellent. We walked out of the court with intense relief as the future of my daughter was secured through his advocacy. I give Attorney Paetzold my highest recommendation and the maximum of 5 stars!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Glastonbury, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
