I had quite the pile up of troubles and Angela did everything in her power to help me “get outta jail free” i was looking at 7 years incarceration and with everything she had done for me, i got 3 years suspended, 2 years probation and 30 days in jail. i’ve never seen a public defender work so hard for a client like Angela does. if YOU put in the work to turn your life around and have proof that you are turning your life around, she will help you get your life back on track! Highly recommend Angela.

Attorney Mike Dwyer handled my DUI case out of Middletown in 2021. Mikes extraordinary ability to put his clients at ease with his calm demeanor is unmatched, and his knowledge and experience of the judicial system is comforting. I cannot make a higher recommendation than Attorney Mike Dwyer for anyone in need of services regarding the law. He is a man who comes across as someone who will roll up his sleeves and fight hard for you, and I will take that any day off the week! You cannot go wrong. Louis Agli.

Kate has gone above and beyond. Our transaction was anything but smooth. Although the people on our team were amazing and worked diligently to make sure things on our end were covered, the other parties involved did not have the same support. Kate communicated consistently, addressed our concerns and made sure our paperwork was done and our needs were met. She continues to do so after the fact as we hit another bump due to no fault of hers. We will definitely continue to utilize her services in the future.

Attorney Scalora handled an auto accident that I had in 2011, he was responsive in dealing with the insurance company and in keeping me informed every step of the way. The settlement was much higher than I expected which was an extremely pleasant surprise.

I was involved in an auto accident a few years ago where I severely injured my back. I didn’t have health insurance at the time and the person who hit me didn’t admit to the police that she was at fault. Her insurance company didn’t accept responsibility and I was left out to hang with all these doctor and hospital bills. I was constantly getting calls and being harassed by the collection agencies. My daughter strongly recommended that I go see Attorney Scalora, which ended up being the best thing I could have ever done! Within days of taking my case, he was able to negotiate all the medical bill with the collection, who then stopped calling me. Attorney Scalora ultimately was able to get the person who hit to admit fault and have her insurance not only pay my outstanding medical bills but also give me a substantial amount of money for pain in my back. Attorney Scalora and his staff go above and beyond legal representation and they care for and treat you as if you are one of their own. I would strongly recommend Attorney Scalora for anyone who has been injured.

Attorney Scalora is an excellent attorney and I would strongly recommend him. I have worked on files with him for the past five years and he has served as a fine example of how a professional lawyer should conduct himself. He is very client friendly and responsive as well as extremely knowledgeable in legal matters and skilled in the courtroom. He has achieved great results for personal injury clients. He is also an excellent business lawyer, both in a litigation and transactional context. He also has a background in accounting. He is also well connected with various experts, private investigators, and other occupations which are helpful in working on a client's case. If I personally needed an attorney, I would hire Attorney Scalora.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Middletown, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
