Alan Harrison has done several utility patents for me in the field of ophthalmic multifocal lenses. Not only all of my patent applications were successful and patents were issued. Within the last 12 months I have filed 2 US utility patents applications; the first patent letter of allowance we have received the letter of allowance from USPTO in THREE (3) months, the second patent was issued in 6 months. I consider it totally amazing IP Attorney performance. Alan is brilliant, has an amazing insight, great communication and literary skills and, as a bonus, refreshing sense of humor. Alan Harrison is the inventors dream IP Attorney I strongly recommend. Thank you Alan!

If there was a 100 star option I would leave it for Janis and her staff. Janis helped me through a 2 year battle with my now ex-husband regarding both custody and finances. Janis wasn’t just my divorce attorney throughout all this, she was a coach, a therapist, a friend. When things were rough she would get on the phone with me to help make sure I was in a good headspace. She constantly reminded me it was a marathon, not a sprint. I felt taken care of during the entire process. Not only is she extremely compassionate and caring to her clients but she is also a pitbull when it is needed in the courtroom. She comes well prepared into hearings and trials and has an extensive knowledge not only of family law, but of the Connecticut court systems. It is clear that she is well respected by her peers, the judges and court room staff. Janis’ staff also goes above and beyond for her clients. Rebekah is always friendly and helpful on the phone and perpetually has a great attitude. Sue does wonderful work for the clients. The office is very responsive to phone calls and emails and does a great job at getting you in to meetings. If you are in need of a divorce attorney, no need to look at further, Laliberte Law is the place to go.

What can I say about Laliberte Law, simply put “they just get it”! I was recommended to Janis by a trusted friend, I quickly discover that Janis personally has three plus decades of experience, solely focus on divorces. It only took five minutes with Janis and her team to know that these folks really cared about what they do and what I had to say. They cared about me as a person, going through hard times, and not just another case. I came to their office feeling alone and lost, and even a bit scared, in the craziness of it all. We immediately struct up a dialog, Janis was empathic to my situation. She patiently listened to my story, and the facts as I knew them. She never “yessed” me. Janise was engaging from the very start, asking me for more details on key topics, and pushing back on me when I started to stray off track. Janis made me feel relaxed, I knew I could tell her anything. She made very clear that she could only best represent me if I was completely open and honest. I knew I had found the team that would fight for me, be in my corner, by my side through the entire process. Janis stepped me through how the process worked and what would be expected of me. She told me her primary goal was to get to a final resolution as quickly as possible. She instilled a confidence in me that in the end, I would be positioned to move on with my life. She fought in the trenches for me, was my voice when no one would listen, she challenges my spouse’s lawyers, and the mediator. Backing down is not her style. She kept in constant contact with me every step of the way. I had total confidence in her and her team. In the end I was very happy with the outcome. I don’t know what I would have done without Laliberte Law representing me. They changed my life and I’m eternally grateful. Michael T. Absolutely outstanding attorney! The best of the best. Janis knows how the system works and will steer you in the right direction. She's kind and practical, brilliant and tough! What more do you need? In my case she consulted and advised me right out of a lengthy and costly legal battle that previous lawyers could not do. With her sage advise I got into superb hands and was able to mediate with a retired judge. Thank you Janis for finding me the road back. Forever grateful!

Greg is an excellent lawyer. I sought his counsel before signing contracts and developing my own art business contracts. I can honestly say that he made me feel comfortable and knowledgeable about what contracts means, what they should include, legalese language etc. He explained it in simple terms which I really appreciated. He is extremely patient, prompt, and responsive. I was very happy with his service and will continue to seek his counsel in my future endeavors. I highly recommend him!

Greg was referred to me by a former colleague as someone who has a depth of knowledge about my industry in particular. This knowledge helps him better understand where designers can get hurt in their contracts and therefore better protect them. He's super available and easy to work with and I give him my highest recommendation!

I worked with Greg to set up my small business and I'm so incredibly glad I did! I had not business experience whatsoever and was very nervous about the entire process. Greg was extremely reassuring, reliable, responsive to all of my needs, and he gave the much needed confidence to get through the entire process. He's prompt and on top of the communication process, logistics with documents, etc. which was wonderful. I would absolutely hire him again in a heart beat, and I am always happy to rant and rave about him to my colleagues and friends!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Milford, Connecticut?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
